Dessert at Louie's
updated: Jul 19, 2014, 1:00 PM

By Lauren Bray

Louie's California Bistro
1404 De La Vina Street (inside the Upham Hotel)
Avg. Dessert Price: $9
Rating: [3/3 eds]

I live near the Upham Hotel and walk past it several times a week. Every time I would glance inside at Louie's and think, "hmm.. I wonder what it's like in there." I had images of an out-dated restaurant with a large clientele of older residents ordering $40 steaks. How wrong I was!

Last Friday night presented the perfect occasion for a visit. We enjoyed a somewhat satisfying meal of my own mediocre cooking and opted to walk somewhere for dessert. There are approximately 20 restaurants within 3 blocks of my place. (Why do I even cook?) I hopped online and researched dessert menus when I found Louie's. Finally, a chance to check it out.

We walked inside and my preconceived notions of what this place was quickly flew out the window. The restaurant is sleek and sophisticated with touches of architectural history. The front of the house has a small antique-looking bar and the friendliest host I've ever met. We were quickly seated inside by the window with a view over Sola Street.

Looking over their diverse dessert menu we finally decided on the apple torte and chocolate cake.

Our waiter asked us which one we liked best. It took some time since both were quite good, but I'm partial to fruit desserts so I had to say the apple torte.

Louie's has been around for 30 years and it's quite obvious they know what they're doing. The staff was professional and accommodating while the desserts made us clean the plate. Seriously, we were scraping the bottom with our spoons. After finishing the lights began to flicker a few times. Naturally I thought is must be old electrical wiring and we left soon after. When arriving at my house I realized the power was out and half of downtown Santa Barbara was in the dark. That's the second time Louie's proved me wrong. Next time I'm going back for a full meal, preferably when the power is on.
