"Agencies" would mean "county operated", there are none. You should be able to get a list of programs by googling Alcohol and Drug treatment programs, Santa Barbara. Information comes from a friend, retired Drug and Alcohol Abuse Councilor.

Ha! "alcohol moderation program?" Go buy an AA book, read the chapter 3- see if it's you. If it's not, cool. If it is, head to the Alano Club- its free, downtown and a lot of sobriety. If you need to "learn how to drink in moderation"..... something is up.

759: yeah, it's just that simple, right? Educate yourself. What may be a simple fix for one person can be hell for another.

An agency does not mean it has to be "county operated", Flicka.

An agency is simply a business or government department which provides a particular service.

Modeling agency.
Travel agency.

Maybe a sober living home: Casa Serena or New House. "Drink moderation" is a risky thing, it's likely someone who is in need of intensive rehab has already tried and failed at moderation. AA works. Call the AA Central office for referrals: 962-3332.

Drink "moderation" for an alcoholic is like being a "little" pregnant. If you think you have a problem and believe "moderation" is an option, ask your family and friends. They'll have a different answer than yours. In any event, good luck.

Substance abuse is a very big elephant in the Santa Barbara area rooms. Remarkable how much the prevalence of alcohol/substance abuse is not talked about. Certainly there are good recovery programs here, but also - sad topic. Am told that Santa Barbara area has a higher suicide rate than many places in the USA.

AA means you have to bow to someone else's god and that is not everyone's cup of tea. Lot's of predators in AA meetings too. The structure of the program focuses to much on the weakness of the individual and not the greatness or potential of that person.

766, the retired counselor told me "agency" in their business meant "county". Doesn't make any difference to me, one way or the other. It's not the point, someone needs help.

Please contact Project Recovery. It is part on the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Addiction. (CADA). It has a sliding fee scale. Many are court ordered but I have known many individuals that have started their sober journey there.

County Jail..You leave when they tell you to leave. My opinion don't go outpatient do a church program where they make you work go to church and eat beans..Don't worry about the brain washing it wears off later on.

Stay away from AA. In my opinion it is a very seductive cult! Sadly, my family was a part of it for a number of years so I have experienced it. There are some secular agencies which would be a much safer choice.

Heeheeh... I love it that so many people freak out about the whole "higher power" concept in AA and confuse it for some kind of cult or religion. There is no changing any attitudes, especially about something as insidious and powerful as alcoholism, when you already have all the answers yourself.

Seriously, there is no help unless you are willing to be helped.

AA welcomes athiests, too. Go to 90 meetings in 90 days, and if your life isn't better, go back to drinking. There are predators in all walks of life. Churches, schools, families, the medical profession ... don't be a victim.

AA works, but not if you have a plan B (That would be 'moderating' your drinking). The people who are putting down AA in here, Sorry you had those experiences. Generally AA's are caring and really know how to help- They will also be the first to admit their imperfections.

My mom went to Project Recovery years ago, we were low income so it was free, it was an intensive live in facility where she stayed for a couple of months and then came to live in a sober house here in SB for another 3 months. It was hard, it worked, she stayed sober. Wish I could get my husband to go to someplace...

If you do end up going to AA, be careful what you share! Many of the people there don't have a clear understanding of the ANONYMOUS component. I worked with a woman who claimed to be 2 yrs sober but would point out clients and tell me about extremely private things that the client had shared in meetings. Really? Not only is she outing these people, but she's sharing intimate details about their lives! That would have been enough to turn me off, had I needed help. If you can afford it, go with a professional agency.

For females: Bethel House in Carpinteria, a lock down for one year. You might try the Salvation Army Hospitality House, they have very strict rules but you can walk out at any time.

I worked in recovery and there are many options. In my opinion the AA in SB is very weak, and cliquey.. There are a few good meetings but that's it. Be careful with AA if you really do not know much about it. All depends on whether the alcohol use is still under control, or if its controlling the person. If that is the case consider checking into cottage for detox. There are plenty of good rehab centers. Michael's in the Palm Springs area has a good reputation even though it is not well known. I'd steer clear of very expensive well known rehabs. Ive been around this recovery industry for years there's a great deal of BS and money to be made. Everyone has an opinion and it is usually different from the next guys. What I do know, if someone really wants to quit using alcohol, they will find a way. I have heard more bad than good about Casa Serena and the other centers around town. But also people claim they have been saved by these places, and maybe they have. I do not know if that helps at all. If one can no longer enjoy AND control their alcohol use, fairly certain they have a problem. Anyway do plenty of research to find what is right for you, even if it means going out of the area.

What is "ED treatment"? Honest question, please don't go off on the obvious. I can't figure out what the post is referring to.

As with everything in life, some things work for some people and some don't. Criticizing is pointless, the curious, in-need person must try things out and decide for themselves.
