Suspicious Boat Retrieved Off Gaviota
updated: Jul 14, 2014, 7:59 PM

By John Palminteri

The U.S. Coast Guard was called out this morning when a fisherman spotted a Mexican panga boat going in circles about three miles from shore.

No one was on board. The wheel had been tied down in one position to get the vessel to do loops. It had two Yamaha engines and they were going at a slow speed.

The Coast Guard dispatched a boat from the Channel Islands Harbor and helicopter from the Los Angeles air station to investigate. There was also a shore search.

No suspects or evidence were located. The boat was tied up to the Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin in the Santa Barbara harbor this evening, awaiting a team from Homeland Security Investigations.
