Massive Power Outage
updated: Jul 12, 2014, 8:16 AM

[Ed note: The original report submitted on Friday 7/11/14 at 10:00pm was accidentally lost, most likely affected by the outage. Below are the original reports that were sent in and any other information related to the power outage.]

Official Update:
Over 3,200 residents were affected by a power outage on Friday evening that ranged from downtown, the Mesa, and the Westside. Numerous edhat subscribers wrote in about losing power, see their reports below. According to So Cal Edison, the outage occurred before 10:00 pm and by 11:30 pm affected 3,231 customers. By 8am Saturday morning, all but 49 customers had their power returned.

Reports by edhat subscribers beginning Friday evening

  • 9:53 pm - Power Outage on the upper east side at Victoria and Salsipuedes
  • 10:00 pm - Power out on Mesa
  • 10:12 pm - Power failure in the Mesa on Miramonte Drive
  • 10:26 pm - Blackout on lower westside since 9:45pm
  • 10:27 pm - Whole block is blacked out on Bath Street and Sola, some houses have lights on and others are completely dark.
  • 11:12 pm - Power flickering back on and back out.
  • 11:33 pm - Power was on and then back out at Victoria and Salsipuedes at 11:33 PM.
  • 1:01 am - Saturday. Power still out on Olive St. near Sola, though there was a brief period of power an hour or two ago. It went out just before 10 pm , just before the end of the wonderful fun silent movie (accompanied by brilliant piano playing by someone) at the courthouse sunken garden. Gorgeous evening in the grass.
  • We were watching the movie in the courthouse sunken gardens when the power went out. We heard loud noises coming from under the courthouse in the back garage. Now there are firetrucks, smoke at the old courthouse. We are now home, power is on on Mesa at top of Cabrillo.
  • I was at the courthouse movies as well and the entire block went out. I still want to know how The Freshman ends!
  • Gillespie St between Vic and anapamu were out, just came back on at 4

A power failure accompanied by smell of smoke ended Friday nights movie at the Sunken Gardens. Here are a few pix of crews trying to pin down the problem. Appeared to be wide spread power outage downtown. Power out from Victoria down to at least Figueroa. Traffic lights out on that part of State Street and to the east on Santa Barbara Street.
