Stricter Gun Regulations after Isla Vista Murders
updated: Jul 10, 2014, 2:10 PM
Earlier this week elected officials met in Isla Vista to discuss proposed measures to strengthen
gun-control laws, reports The Independent.
Representative Lois Capps spoke about the "Pause for Safety Act" that would define specific steps for law
enforcement such as, checking gun databases before welfare checks, allowing families to obtain court
orders to confiscate firearms temporarily, and allowing families to prohibit firearm purchases.
State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson previously stated in a press release that two bills passed that help prevent gun violence.
Senate Bill 505 would require law enforcement to first conduct a search of the Department of Justice's
Automated Firearms System to find out whether the person in question may have purchased firearms, and
how many. Senate Bill 580 would provide funding to take guns away from those who illegally possess them,
update aging computer systems used to track gun ownership, and provide training on how to use the
statewide database of gun purchases.
