Scanner Reports 7-9-14
updated: Jul 09, 2014, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

The other night as I was sleeping and dreaming. I dreamt that I was standing on the side of a road in some place it coulda been Indiana, or Iowa and two car loads of men were driving by. I only saw one face clearly it was that of an old friend of mine long since dead. His name was Jim a preacher who in his later years drove back and forth across America preaching the word of the Lord. His Son Cal was my next door neighbor. Jim had this look on his face like he was just checking on me to see if I was still around. Both Jim and Cal were a couple of real Good Old Boys from Iowa even though Cal called Santa Barbara home for over 20 years. Cal along with another fella owned and ran a Moving Company a lot of different people who needed money for food and a roof over their heads worked for. I wasn't one of those people; my back was bad by then. Cal was kind of a jerky hard ass but he was good in his heart because he put a lot of people to work who no one else in their right mind would hire. Some of them are going to kick my ars for saying that. I was one of Cal's drinking pals for a time. He drank me under the table never knew many people that could out drink me but Cal was one of them.

When Jim, Cal's father passed away, Cal closed up shop and let go of his half of the business. Eventually he went home to Iowa, and on his 47th Birthday, he died. It was kind of a Freak Accident. No one was with him so no one really knows how he died. He started to have health problems when he moved back to Iowa he had Asthma and a number of things could have made it worse, I know that because I have it too although It's not as bad in California. Anyway with all his health problems he seemed to know he wasn't long for the world a couple weeks before he died he apologized to some of his old friends for treating them scrappy. It was a real shock for us still when he passed away on Pearl Harbor Day, which was his Birthday, being so young and all. From what I remember of it he was having difficulty breathing and what I heard somehow ran his head into a wall breaking his neck I will probably hear something different after this is posted because there are still questions surrounding the death, I'm sure. That was a few years back I think I was 48 then, I'm 56 now. The Day after the dream I saw an article on line about the Gary, Indiana Police Officer who was shot dead on his 47th Birthday. Gary, Indiana is and has always been a rough town; it's right next to Hammond where I'm from. Other than both passing away on their 47th Birthdays and both deaths being mysteries I know these deaths have nothing in common.

I believe the police officer's death will be cleared up pretty quickly compared to that of my former neighbor whose death will more than likely always be assumed as a freak accident and therefore stay a mystery. For some reason I can't seem to get these deaths out of my head, and so I wrote about them. Officer Jeffrey Westerfield was described as a Happy Family Man a divorced Father of 4 Daughters from a previous marriage he was engaged to be married and would have been August the 24th. He was 47 years old with 19 years of service with the Gary, Indiana Police department. He is thought to have been killed during the midnight shift and found in his vehicle at 5:45 am in the 2600 Block of Van Buren Street. The last call he was on was a shots fired call in the area. He was one of two Police Officers who died in the line of duty over the Weekend. Both police officers were killed in Indiana. Rest in Peace Officer Perry Renn Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Dept, Indianapolis, Indiana and Officer Jeffrey Westerfield Gary, Indiana Police Dept Gary, Indiana.
