A fog bank is rolling into SB and Goleta. Are any other Edhatter's calling off there voyage to local fireworks?

Oh yes, as a TV hill person, fog HAS ruined the display in the past and it look alike it's going to, again. The rockets go up into the cloud and you see a red cloud, or a green cloud, but all the pretty shapes of the cascading fireworks are lost in the fog. Sad.

It seems they should just postpone until a non-foggy night. Why waste it?

It is fine down here at City College above the waterfront. Looks like good viewing ahead!

I'm on Lincolnwood and we decided not to go with the fog rolling in. I am learning something new about Santa Barbara (newby here), I didn't realize that you can still hear the pops and wooshes from the show from here. It would be nice to be able to see them from here as well. My happy dog is not so happy right now.

So it was a malfunction. Show ended at 9:16 and started up again at 9:36. Too bad for pet owners (I'd opened my windows back up) and people who started leaving. Look forward to hearing from attendees.
Good luck Bay Pyrotechnics. (They ran last year and this year's Simi Valley show; last year there was an explosion linked to a malfunctioning firework not manufactured by them.)

From Upper East, very lower Riviera: We could see the tops and bottoms of the largest "flowers," but the middle was "censored" by the fog.

Someone in my 'hood is raising mosquitoes, big time. In this year of bad drought, loads of the little buggers were feasting on us. Made looking at the fireworks a secondary occupation.

I walked all the way home from Leadbetter & had already set up my camera to post some pics when I heard it start up again. Somebody's gonna get fired, methinks...

Lots of bursts lost in the fog. Looks like they had some kind of technical glitch leading to a long break in the show, then erratic firing of a few more shells 10-15 minutes later and a couple of what seemed like very low bursts. If there was a planned "Grand Finale," it didn't happen, but beautiful fireworks in any case.

Walking up Milpas from the beach slightly after 10 we were passed by 3 SBPD units going full steam, "pedal to the metal" Code 3 winding across lanes toward Cabrillo, then heard the fire engine take off. Waiting for Roger's update.

Lots of disappointment for the many viewers at the Mission. Most of the fireworks obscured by the big strand of fog, then it just stops abruptly at 9:15, and at 9:38, when everyone's walking home, it starts up again. People at the park were confused and thought they'd canceled the finale due to the fog. We tried to be optimistic but when it got to be 9:25 we thought it was over, so we left. At least half the crowd left before us. We were just arriving at our house in San Roque when we heard "the finale" begin. What a rip.

Where was the music this year? With or without the fog, a very, very disappointing show (in my opinion).

We went to see the Fireworks in Goleta. We backed into a parking spot In the Best Buy section of Camino Real. We had a great view! We had planned on going to my in-laws to see the ones in Santa Barbara, but we were afraid the fog would interfere. I'm glad we decided against it. Goleta had a wonderful show!

I had been going for the past seven years to the Costco area to watch and promised myself I wouldn't go back again until I'd forgotten how bad the past three years were. Kind of like I feel about Solvang. Hot, crowded and full of tourists, high priced food and souvenirs. Heard about the glitch. Must have been a disappointment, and I read somewhere that they couldn't afford the music this year. Perhaps if they had it they could have explained it further. Remember way back when there was only one display and it was simulcast on the radio and the local television company was in real time? I am dating myself, but those were the good old days. Happy and SAFE 4th of July folks!

The top and bottom layer of fireworks were visible from the Lower Riviera, but the middle section was shrouded in fog. The intermission made it kinda interesting.

837: I didn't see it, but I heard it. Totally illegal and my poor dog was traumatized. I hope the person or persons were apprehended.
How about how KEYT reported about how wonderful Santa Maria's booths are which sell 'safe' fireworks. . . They leave off of their report that such things are illegal in Santa Barbara.

We watched from West Beach. Yeah, very disappointing that Bay blew it. We left when we thought it was over only to see it start up again. The Bay staff had a bullhorn, so why didn't they use it to say hold on more coming??? Oh thats right, because Bay sucks. I hope they never are used again. Plus the no music had everyone asking wtf.

This year's SB Independence Day fireworks display was the worst that I have ever attended. Some of it was the fault of the elements, but that long gap before they finished was all too human.

The fireworks are put on by the City, paid for by the Waterfront Department out of slip fees and parking fees. Complain to the City about this --- slipholders should certainly do so!

The Goleta show was spectacular and the fog added to it, after they were over the mist was enchanting :)

I've noticed that in the last few years, the downtown July 4 fireworks have been getting shorter and decidedly less spectacular. I recall some far better displays in the late 1990s, way ahead of recent years' efforts. Is the city employing a different contractor?

The small town I lived at in Wisconsin for 2 years before moving back (to CA) always put on a stunning show - despite being financially strapped during the early 1990s recession. Perhaps the midwest has a different take on July 4? If I was living on billionaire's row, I'd offer to sponsor the fireworks myself - it would cost (relative) chump change and SB would get a real 4th July salute.

The SB show attracts a real Classy crowd who come with their pit bulls and tape off huge sections of park space for BBQ and getting drunk. I think a lot of them come from out of town similar to the IV party scene.

I watched the fireworks from my deck with Peaches, who just happens to be the best pooch in the world. We couldn't see the fireworks at all due to some of the major obstructions in our way....mainly the roof. We enjoyed it completely because we could see the woderful colored flashes and could feel the booooooom boooooooooom BOOOOOOMS in our bones! Fog or not, you just have to enjoy the whole event. Like my Mom used to say, if you get lemons, make some lemon bars, lemonade, or something with those sour lemons, but don't cry about it because it does no one any good. Great advice!!

I wonder if people get away with the tactic of pre-reserving spaces for events by taping off large sections of a public park or placing lawn chairs and blankets along parade routes the day before the event elsewhere? Is that "stake a claim and expect people to respect it" model unique to Santa Barbara, or is it common behavior elsewhere in the Golden State? I come from a place where the only way to hold a spot is to park your butt there and wait.

@880P Although I have seen people through down blankets to stake out sections of beach eariler in the day, those people are usually there all day as well. I have seen fireworks all overt he country and even worked five summers during the forth. Not only have I not see the type of roping off we see here in SB, it was strictly not allowed in some places period. As far as I am concerned sorry, a little piece of yellow tape is not going to hold your spot if no one is actually there.

Sorry to hear about SB fireworks being a bust. I was pretty upset we were going to see the Goleta fireworks this year. Much to my surprise however, the show was amazingly long, no interruptions and honestly it was one of the best finales I have seen anywhere.

The Capitol 4th is an amazing Fireworks display for our country's
238th Birthday, when 256 brave and patriotic men signed the Declaration of Independence from Great Britan and King George.
Washington D.C. pulls out all of the stops. John Williams, plus the 1812 Overature complete with our nation's presidential howitzers firing at the appropriate moments.

The only missing element, was our National Debt Clock clicking away in the lower left corner of the screen!

I was on the Condor and also had the same view as many where we could see the top and bottom of the fireworks. It was my first time viewing it this way that I enjoyed it regardless. When we got back and got off, we were treated to the great finale as many of us watch. It was awesome and glad for the delay for it allowed us to see it and enjoyed it.

One thing I liked was as I walked down state to see the fireworks I saw a bunch of young people that I think were from the English language school showing lots of red white and blue in their outfits. It seemed a nice touch.

THE PLACE for the awesome, fog-free fireworks was Solvang.

They are held each July 4th at the Old Mission & can be viewed from many areas of the S.Y. Valley for free.

Try it next year. Never fog, always warm at 9pm when they begin & it's easy to leave via foot or vehicle when they end at 9:30 pm.

no one may read this old thread, but Bay is not looking good. As I posted in another thread, Bay pyrotechnics ran Simi Valley's show in 2013; the one that exploded.

They reportedly did not manufacture the shell that fired inside the mortar.

Yeah, I had to include the video of Simi 2013:
