Concerts in the Park Kickoff!
updated: Jul 05, 2014, 1:00 PM

By the Dedicated Staff of edhat.com

The Dedicated Staff was motivated to start the Santa Barbara summer off right, and what's more local and summery than concerts in the park? Thursday evening was the kickoff for the Parks & Recreation Department's "Concerts in the Park Summer Series" with Sgt. Pepper, a Beatles 50th Anniversary Tribute band.

We all know how Santa Barbarians love to reserve their space ahead of time at outdoor functions. Long before the Solstice parade, Fiesta parade, La Fiesta Pequeña, and even the 4th of July fireworks show, locals claim their space with blankets, chairs, even caution tape. It shouldn't have been a surprise to our dedicated staffer who went down to Chase Palm Park on Thursday at noon to lay out a blanket. Ed warned the staffer to get there early because space fills up quickly. He wasn't kidding. The photo below was taken at 12:02 pm on Thursday, just two minutes after the time where people can reserve space. Concerts in the Park is serious business and our staffer reportedly witnessed many people sprinting through Chase Palm Park in suits.

Once the space was secured the staff arrived to the sounds of Beatle cover songs. Locals quickly rose to the dance floor to sing and shake their groove thing. An edhat subscriber captured the below video of dancers enjoying the music.

It was estimated that over 3,000 people were in attendance, a record according to the Parks & Rec Department. John Wiley shared a photo of his Thursday flyover showing a very crowded park.

Concerts in the Park will continue every Thursday night from 6-8:30pm in Chase Palm Park, the last one is scheduled for August 14th. It's family and puppy friendly, but no alcohol is permitted (shhh.. we won't tell). For more information, visit santabarbaraca.gov/concerts or call (805) 564-5418.
