Restaurant Review: Metropulos

Surprisingly, I visited Metropulos for the first time a few weeks ago. I had always driven by and thought, what a cute little place with its decorative metal rooster and pig out front. I can't believe it took me this long to visit, but I'm glad I did. The small market and deli provides meats, cheeses, sandwiches, wine and beer, salads, wraps, and of course gyros!

The coveted gyro is not made every day, only on Thursdays and Fridays from 11a-4p, and Saturdays from 11a-3p or until sold out. They use lamb and beef from Shalhoob Meat Co. with a house-made tzatzigiki and locally-made pita bread. It's also served with a side of Greek peasant salad which is made up of onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and probably a few other ingredients I can't spell. The gyro itself was good, but not as amazing as I anticipated. The meat was soft, tender, and it wasn't dowsed in tzatzigiki, which is great, but it was still missing a little something. The seasonings and flavor was slightly lacking and I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was. It was still good, but not as good as the gyros I remember from the Greek Festival. (Who makes those by the way?) I rated the gyro 2.5/3 Eds due to it being a little bland, but still pretty good.

My date ordered the Metroreuben filled with pastrami, sauerkraut, house Russian dressing, thinly sliced red onions, and Swiss cheese that's heated up and placed on mixed greens and tomatoes, with whole grain dijoned-multigrain sour-dough toast. Admittedly, pastrami isn't my favorite but a small bite could have changed my mind. According to the pastrami expert consuming the sandwich, it was rated 3/3 Eds due to the lean pastrami and delicious mix of flavors.

There's no doubt that Metropulos knows what they're doing in the meat and cheese department. I averaged the two scores of 3/3 and 2.5/3 for a total of 2.75/3 Eds for taste and ambiance. However, I'll definitely be back on their gyro making days to try another!
