Harbor Permit for July 4th
updated: Jul 02, 2014, 10:59 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I have a new boat in the harbor and would like to celebrate the 4th of July by watching the fireworks down there. I have a Harbor parking permit but am wondering, are there usually available spaces on the 4th or should I be prepared for it to be a madhouse and walk/find alternative transportation?

You have to be realistic, if you are asking can I wait till 5:30 and race to the harbor and expect parking, no

We go down around noon and have never have a problem

If you have a permit you might as well leave your car there early in the morning and find alternative transportation to get down later in the night.

The waterfront is a nightmare after the fireworks. I would leave your car closer to home and take alternative transport to the harbor.

We usually park in the area of Victoria and State and walk down from there. By the time we get back to the car, traffic has dissipated, plus we get exercise.

Yes, there are spots. Most people avoid that fly trap. Very difficult to get out.

If you have a permit, leave your car there early and figure out a way to get there later. I did that one year, worked like a charm. Park close to the exits.

yes, if you leave right now and start looking for one, you should have no problem.

Bicycles were invented for use on the 4th and during Fiesta.

If you MUST drive, park on the mountain side of the freeway and bike the rest.

After the fireworks, you can easily glide through the pedestrian traffic back to your car.

personally i would avoid trying to park all together down there.....best thing is get dropped off then get picked up.....but if you really want your car and to deal with the mad house i would park early and get dropped off.

A harbor permit only means you're paid for the year and avoid paying parking fees at the exit kiosk... that's all.

Clearly if you get there early enough to park in the harbor lot you have a reserved spot to watch the show from the comfort of your boat.... lucky you.

If I had a new boat in the harbor, I'd sleep on it after the 4th!!

That's great place to park on the 4th as long as you enjoying leaving the lot around midnight.

Sorry, I was only speaking from my experience parking early and leaving asap has been pretty easy the last couple of years...... and we are actually driving a "gasp" car

This is a three day weekend for a lot of people, a three and half day for some. If you get to the marina early in the morning you might find a place. We would do that and would have lunch and dinner on our boat and spend the night after the show. It's a great way to celebrate without the congestion afterward.

One year five of us -- wife, myself, and three kids rode our motorcycle down, Asian style, and parked near the fireworks. Easily got out too. Kids are too big now.

So glad we can see this display from our home. We went down there one year. Never again. Too crazy/congested.

Thanks for all the good advice. This is why I love EdHat! I just saw on the news that they are expecting huge crowds since it's a 3-day weekend so I'll take provisions down tomorrow and we'll walk on the 4th since we only live about 2 miles away and my husband is obsessed with getting in more steps after acquiring his FitBit. Enjoy.

@406 that is a great idea! Be sure though that you don't leave any of your "provisions" for the city to pick up. Every year I see garbage overflowing in/around containers. I suppose it's better than leaving it in the gutters. If more people were responsible for cleaning up after themselves we'd all benefit from those efforts. Thank you and please everyone: Pick up after yourselves.
