Quick question:

Looking for any recommendations for a local auto salvage/junk yard/auto recycling place locally that would buy a totaled car for cash. Thanks.

That junkyard out in Goleta by the airport is fair and reputable.

Mission Auto Wrecking is the best in town to work with, however I don't believe they buy totaled vehicles.

Try Steelhead Auto Recyclers. Just be careful.

Ditto Be Careful @ Steelhead
Look in the throwaway papers(Trade Express/etc) There are companies as far away as Simi & Atascadero that will come for your Junk. Just be a wise shopper & make sure towing is included. Dont forget to send in the DMV Notice of Transfer-sometimes junkyards 'forget' to complete the paperwork.

Max Auto Salvage (805) 343-5552 pays cash and they tow. They cover from Carpinteria to Paso Robles.

Definitely stay FAR away from Steelhead. After reading lot's of bad reviews, I still had to get a car part that they said they had. Twice, they gave me the wrong part!! SERIOUSLY!!???? Then, they tried to tell me they wouldn't refund my money, but give me store credit instead..... NO WAY... All this happened in the same day.... I live downtown, I drive out to Goleta & pick up part, drive back to my mechanic downtown, drive all the way back out to Goleta..... you get the picture.... Stay clear of Steelhead

Steelhead is an okay place to buy parts, but they won't pay you what you can get from a Ventura/Santa Paula/L.A. wrecker.

I wish I could remember the guy I used. He drove up from Oxnard or some place down south. Handed me $250 and hauled off my beloved beast of a car. Of course, my car was nearly all metal, steel bumpers and such.

You can get a good bit of cash, depending on market prices for the metals. Just be sure to strip off anything you think you can resell or give to friends. Radio? Newer car battery? That part you just had your repair guy install? You can make some extra cash that way.

You really don't want to deal with Steelhead. I needed a very minor part for my wife's Volvo--a part that would have cost about $10 if I'd bought it new. Steelhead told me that they wouldn't sell ANY part for less than $20. ANY part from any car! I'm really surprised they're still in business.

I have never heard of the local wrecking yards paying for unwanted cars. I have used R&R auto wrecking since my go to guy was killed by his son. That was Black Road from Santa Maria. R&R doesn't give a much but they tow it away at no charge. If you get something here locally post it, but I'd be surprised. R&R 805 343-6469

There are several people in SB that will take/buy a totaled car. Few years ago, I was gonna salvage a little Honda, and , everyone I talked with, said they would give me $300-$350. I wanted more, because it was running, had lots of new parts, good tires etc. I ended up selling privately on Craigslist.org for $700.

I know the OP said it was totaled , but how bad is it? Does it run at all? You might be able to do the California Buy-back, or you might be eligible to do the California funded repair. How bad is this car?

We posted on craigslist and a salvage yard in the Valley had someone with a tow truck come pick it up.

OP here. Car was 'totaled' by insurance company, but the damage is to the left rear suspension, rear gate and left quarter panel. It's a 2006 Scion xB. It could definitely be repaired by the right handy person/mechanic, just for parts and labor, the cars overall value isn't worth me repairing it for as much money as the quotes have been.

Probably would be better to just accept the salvage settlement instead of buying it back and trying to get more by junking it yourself - unless you have mechanical skills and can remove and sell the various parts - engine, trans. etc.

Max Auto Salvage just picked up our old van (not running for years). Paid cash. They take crashed or wrecked vehicles, too.
