Scam Alert
updated: Jun 26, 2014, 2:00 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

A man claiming to be with the SB Sheriff's department called with my name, address, phone number claiming that a judge issued a bench warrant for not showing up for jury duty. When I asked for his supervisor, he hung up. The real Sheriff's department says it is a scam to wire money to "clear the warrant."

UPDATE provided by another edhat subscriber:

Scam alert - A woman in Montecito was the target of a scammer this week. Here's her story: "I got a phone call from a 'Sheriff's Dept' Lt. Williams who said I missed a jury duty notice and he had a warrant for my arrest. He wanted me to purchase a $495 Green Dot Money Pak. He sounded real at first, but of course it's not. I called the Sheriff's Office to confirm, and they said they did not make the call. This 'Lt. Williams' has a syrupy Southern accent. I called him back , said he was a fraud and hung up."

Never answer your phone unless you know the person that is calling you.

When the guy gets caught, let's all call him at the jail and ask if he wants to have his arrest warrant expunged? Just send 500 bucks to my account, bub. A visit would be better, I'm your lawyer pal and you need to send me a thousand bucks in advance or you're going to rot in here for 350 years.

NEVER EVER trust someone phoning from a call center. No point trying to convince them to take you off their lists or that they are wrong in bothering you ... just hang up and if you hang up on them mid sentence the better.

Another con going around is the "call from jail" which asks you to accept a call from an inmate at an out of area jail. If you do they get credit card and other information. Never give up such data on a call you did not initiate and cannot be certain of.

Are you SURE it wasn't Sheriff Brown? He's always asking for more money.
