Scanner Reports 6-25-14
updated: Jun 25, 2014, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Hump Day Wednesday. Time sure seems to fly. On Monday I was doing my thang listening to the Scanner when there was a knock at the door. I don't get many visitors I'm a bit of a loner. I waited hoping the knock would go away along with whoever was knocking. Then I heard someone say "Byrd are you in there?" Byrd, my nick name, Great I thought an old drinking buddy came down here to relive old times. They kept knocking so I answered the door they were not going to go away. It was Mark, someone I knew through another friend but at the time I didn't know it was Mark because I quit remembering names a few years ago after my last Drunk. Mark was there to inform me that Popeye was missing. Popeye is someone I have known a long time. He told me that Popeye switched from beer to Vodka, started pounding the booze. He got to a point a lot of drunks do when everything starts to come out without warning. I'm sure there might be a better way to put it but I can't think of it right now. Vodka. Went from beer to vodka just like that. Sounds like suicide to me; like someone giving up. I have known many. I thought back to the last time I saw Popeye he didn't look to good, kinda like Edwin a couple months before he died. I thought the last time I saw Popeye it would not be too long for him either. It takes a drunk to know a drunk. Mark told me Popeye went to the hospital and the last he heard on the 11th of June Popeye had been released from the hospital but he never returned so all his friends thought he might be in jail, or the morgue. I asked Mark Popeye's real name and wrote it down. I would ask around but that's all I could do.

I found Popeye alive and sober in a nursing home in Goleta. It was the first place I called I got to speak with him. He told me he had to stay there for 20 days, he sounded good. I told him all his pals was worried about him including his girlfriend of 10 years, they sleep outside like many others. Popeye was offered a home to live in but he would not leave his girlfriend out on the streets. It sounds to me like outside isn't working so well anymore so hopefully if he's offered a place to move into again he will be able to take his Common Law Wife with him. After I spoke with him I realized that I didn't get Mark's phone number and Popeye's girlfriend was probably worried sick so I had to go find her and let her know where he was and that he's ok. I went down to East Beach found her let her know. Happens to a lot of us we get older and can't take care of ourselves anymore ending up in a Nursing Home. Sad but true; gotta go somewhere I'm sure if I live on awhile I'll end up there myself. I don't like to think about it though. I think for Popeye it was good if only for a while. He was getting much needed rest he has lived outside for a long time, as long as I have known him, 16 years. He's a veteran on the housing list I hope he gets a place with his Gal. It's a shame that so many veterans are Homeless.

I just love depression it always hits you without warning. I just heard an old friend was given the wrong medication and now she's in a coma. I did not know her that well but none the less it made me sad. I guess between that and everything else.
