Best Solvang Bakery
updated: Jun 24, 2014, 3:22 PM

I hope this doesn't lead to rioting in the streets and burning of windmills, but do Edhatters have an opinion as to what the best bakery in Solvang is?

Olsen's... if you trust Yelp.

I prefer Bakers Table in Santa Ynez, but they do something more like classic French pastry and bread instead of the sickly sweet danishes. Nothing in the SYV comes close to Renaud's in SB though.

Ditto 322 ... and though different and a bit sweet for our tastes is Andersen's Bakery on State St in SB. Honestly we did a taste test once going to Solvang one day and Mrs. A's the next and thought Andersen's was waay better. When we told this to Mrs. A she said there used to be many more actual Danish bakeries, and they had sort of a consortium or a community of like-minded businesses, but that over time the Solvang originals have sold to others. Anyway, Andersen's is excellent for Danish, and excel at marzipan.

I'll be curious what Edhatters recommend in Solvang since going to Solvang is fun for visitors and we have some coming next week too!

Olsen's - Period

Trust me because I've lived here for over 30 years & it's the only "real deal" Danish bakery that never changes, because they don't have to!

Not a 'Danish bakery', but I like the cookies, pies, tarts, scones, cupcakes, breads etc., from PattiBakes in Buellton. Great stop on a road trip. 1 block east of 101 on 246. Nice b'fast or lunch stop weekdays.

Mrs. Andersen on State St in SB may be the only real deal hereabouts: Our family has been seduced by her offerings for some forty or more years now. Like any good restauranteur, she is always in the shop, riding herd on what's happening.

Throughout all this very long time, Andersen's has continued to produce consistently fine, delicate, unique Scandinavian treats.

I consider Andersen's a treasure, and always recommend that visitors enjoy real Scandinavian delights here. If you sneak just a little around the display cases of a couple of the "Danish" bakeries in Solvang, you will (alas) see that there are transliterated labels on the trays, so the salespeople, who know nothing about Danish foods, will be able to understand what the customers are asking for.

As a bonus, Andersen's also has a variety of nice champagnes, plus a good wine list

Olsen's is the real deal for an authentic Danish Bakery in Solvang - he's a Dane through and through, same recipes sound in bakeries in Denmark. Andersen's used to be located in Solvang BTW. You can't compare Danish bakeries and French bakeries. Just like you can't compare either with a Mexican bakery.Totally different ingredients, methods, etc.

The one by the Windmill, been there forever it seems, excellent melt in your mouth pastries and very nice ladies to serve and bake all day long with nice ambiance and good prices.

Olsen's for sure. As a bonus their kringle and butter rings are cheaper than other bakeries in town. I'm a local.

I am a Mortensen's fan - the sheer variety and those petit fours are just so lovely....and then I walk back to Buellton and any sins are erased (well, mostly)..

My husband and I think the best bakery is the Solvang Bakery, which is located on Alisal Road in a very charming shop. There are a few tables inside as well as some located outside in the small courtyard out back.

I live in the Valley and Olsen's is by far the most authentic and delicious. Bakers Table is good for bread but they have a very limited selection of pastries. I also think they are overpriced. Two bacon and egg croissants and two coffees ran us close to thirty bucks. If you are visiting Solvang I would eat the Aebelskiver while there and get Olsen's pastries to take home. For dinner I would cruise over to SY and the Red. Barn. The brothers have made this place come alive again with fantastic food and a total remodel.

Another vote for Olsen's. LOVE their butter rings.

BTW, I will never again give Patti Bakes another penny of my money after she canceled my wedding cake on me a week before the ceremony (she said she didn't want to do wedding cakes any more). Luckily, the Solvang Bakery was able to help us out of our predicament.
