Santa Barbara Rated Best City for Singles

conducted a survey on the 10 Best Cities for Singles where they named Santa Barbara as #1. They focused
on "financially attractive and socially satisfying areas." As locals, we know why it's socially appealing to live
here, but we're curious as to what is included in being financially attractive.
Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Council for Community and Economic Research, the
researchers at Kiplinger focused on metropolitan areas with populations above 125,000 and a high
percentage of singles. They factored in household incomes typically above the national median, eliminated
areas with a high unemployment rates, favored places with a highly educated population, and also added
in the cost of living.
Let's look at the stats that made Santa Barbara # 1.
Metro population: 343,712
[This might be the first time we've heard Santa Barbara's entire county referred to as a metro area.]
Percentage of unmarried adults: 52.2%
Cost of living: 7.2% below U.S. average
Median annual household income: $62,723
Date-night tab: $32.83
[We're curious where they ate for that price! An average date-night tab for a decent restaurant on State Street will usually be closer to double that figure.]
They acknowledge the high living costs, but suggest our "overall metro area" like Santa Maria for more
