The OP has family coming, El Encanto is the last place to go. Nice view but the reviews are mostly bad, and 451 is right.

I would go to Endless Summer or the deck of the Harbor on Stearns Wharf.

This time of year the sunset is not over the ocean from Santa Barbara. Jalama beach would work.

I think the Boathouse has a great view and the food is pretty good too.

If you are lucky at the Harbor, you can also watch the pelican diving for dinner and the seals bobbing around!

The OP stated he, or she, is looking for the "best" location to take in the view and a sunset. $$$ appears to not be the primary concern, so that narrows it down to best restaurant & and view. I give my vote to the El Encanto. It is an exceptional venue and nothing comes close with the exception of the Bella Vista Room in terms of a view.

But since the OP didn't say anything about burning $100 dollar bills we can eliminate the Hell Encanto.

Read the reviews.

Getting married at El Encanto in August – just did my tasting and the food is amazing. They have a new chef and the menu is way better. Check it out.

I would also like to avoid noisy drunks. We have had some delightful gatherings at Goleta Beach with pizza.

Miro! We went with a couple last night. They have a diverse and gourmet dinner menu. The desserts were a bit too gourmet and didn't hit the spot but I give it top top ratings for incredible quality food, world class service and a sense of being enveloped in a Santa Barbara ocean sunset. Of course ask for the patio dining.

El Encanto and Boathouse can't be beat for sunset views. But I always take out-of-towners for the outside Happy Hour at San Ysidro Ranch. Too early for a sunset but the setting and vibe can't be beat.

For 50 years it would have been Santa Barbara Inn, now destroyed by a Bakersfield $$ mogul whose wife thinks the restaurant should be ground floor! A tragic loss for our community!

598 is right, SB Inn "had" been designed to take advantage of our sun (that doesn't set in the ocean) & skyviews. Whenever we crave ocean view dining we go to Beachside in Goleta. Their patio is always nice. The Boathouse is a favorite as well but it's not as easy to get in there, smaller & the parking is difficult. ... Don't forget that you can also take them up to the Couthouse Tower (closes at 4:30) for a birds eye view of our beautiful town.

As 464 stated, this time of year, the sunset isn't over the ocean, so the only decent place is on the Santa Barbara Pier--sticks out far enough to get a nice sunset over the harbor and all the sailboat masts make a nice backdrop. Moby Dicks would be the better view, but the food is average at best. The Harbor isn't as far out on the water, but SLIGHTLY better food. But, both will give a better sunset view, while dining on the ocean, than anywhere else in town. The Boathouse is tucked in behind the cliffs enough that you won't see ANYTHING like a decent sunset, but, it's near the sand and the food is better than either the Harbor or Moby Dicks. Same goes for the Beachside in Goleta.
So, what's is gunna be? The food or the view??

Why is it that so many beachside restaurants have such mediocre food?

COMMENT 529622 agree helpful negative off topic

No sunset, beachside views in SB at this time of year. Jalama for a burger fits the bill! Beyond that, and for best waterside food, try Mussel Shoals, dine outside, watch the waves crash right at your feet, great seafood and right on the water...but no sunset...Best compromise? El Encanto!

It depends upon what you are looking for. Any hot dog stand on the beach will give you a sunset view. But if you are looking for a special evening, the Coral Casino sits right on the water.

Boathouse or Beachside with a seat at the window or on the patio of either. The Harbor or Moby Dicks also have a nice view to the West but include more than just the sunset in the vista.

Well, 579 has his/her facts wrong. The owner of the Santa Barbara Inn is from Fresno and but lives here and has done some very nice projects. Most recent is the development in Montecito behind the San Ysidro Pharmacy. He is also a UCSB graduate and cares for the community very much.

That said, the view from Citronelle was superb!

I watched the whole sunset sitting at the outside tables on the end of the Warf at the Shellfish Company, BEAUTIFUL sunset over the marina, wear sunscreen and take your sunglasses and a wind breaker, though they have heaters above tables for ya and the food is AWESOME! 90 minute free parking or get it validated. Go for a visit to the aquarium on the pier beforehand, then stroll the warf afterwards and have ice cream or shop, it's so convenient and fun.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Brophy Brother's. Great harbor view and the view of Santa Barbara is spectacular. If you get past the fried items on the menu the food is decent. It isn't fine dining but it is usually a great experience with all the activity in the harbor and the sunset view of the Santa Barbara Riviera.

I second the Harbor - also upstairs at Longboard's. And yes, the sun does sink into the ocean - to the West (that's where it sets, folks!)

@ auntie s depends on the time of the year where it can be seen sinking into the ocean.

This time of year, the sun is setting almost over the mountains (toward goleta). I'd think you'd have to either go out on the pier or somewhere with a view of the mountains - like maybe cafe stella's patio...
