Anniversary Dinner Seafood Recommendation
updated: Jun 20, 2014, 1:37 PM

We're celebrating our anniversary tonight & want some seafood. Lobster would be great! Three friends have told us to splurge & go to the Enterprise Fish Company. Opinions? Thanks

Enterprise fish Company is our favorite. We have never had a bad meal or bad service there. We never worry how things will taste, or if it will be prepared well. We've splurged on lobster and crab, however usually get the mixed seafood grill and splurge on appetizers. Happy Anniversary!

It's my go-to place. FisHouse is nice too. I tend to take advantage of the specials; of course there are none on Friday. Call Enterprise and see if there are any reservations, it's going to be a busy night!
Fanciest & most expensive: Seagrass
Haven't eaten at the Harbor in years.

Or try Opal, or maybe Intermezzo http://www.intermezzosb.com/ for something different. Enjoy, and congrats.

Went to Enterprise recently for the first time in many years and it did not disappoint. Food and drink were absolutely as fantastic as I remember. Service was great. Atmosphere was fun, yet romantic. I will return again soon.

Enterprise most definitely. The have the most amazing lobster bisque as well. The Cioppino is absolutely out of this world.

Boathouse at Arroyo Burro Beach - Same folks as the Fishouse - but nicer view.

Depends on your budget and how important it is to celebrate the same day, with lobster. You could always celebrate again and get Maine lobster special at Enterprise Mon-Thurs. for $33. Now I want the seafood mixed grill for lunch! (the other $ saving trick - go for lunch). Lobster is $57 tonight. The charming and professional young man who answered the phone actually suggested the special. I am impressed. -441

Hungry Cat for the highest quality. Boat House for more standard seafood dishes but still good and if you want a view. Enterprise is terrible

OK, IF money was no object then what would be the best place to go the the best seafood in SB? Been to most of the ones recommended and found them wanting.

My choice would be Brophy's. Always good but often crowded.

Seagrass really is the loveliest, most romantic, we always spend ours there. Fishouse has great fish but not very romantic.

I second Seagrass. We also had a lovely meal at Buchon recently. While not a seafood place, they do serve fish and it was amazing.

I've lived in this town for 38 years and have been to Enterprise countless times and have been disappointed each and every time. The food is average, fish not fresh, it's loud, and service is usually mediocre.

Seagrass and Bouchon for delicious, fresh, unique, food, wonderful ambiance, and impeccable service. They are definitely pricier, but for a special night out...please don't do Enterprise!

Fishouse serves consistently overcooked and overpriced fish. Nikko's in Goleta is good but probably not the atmosphere you want.

Wow, forgot about Seagrass. Awesome seafood, treated delicately, but flavorful and often way creative. They also have a great all the time Axcess deal still I believe. Top notch.

Enterprise is always good but always loud. Brophys is good but you need to be OK with an hour wait even on a rainy Tuesday in February and your neighbor's elbow in your ribs throughout the meal. We discovered Lure's Fish House in Camarillo (there's one in Ventura but haven't been there). Great service, bar, ambiance, and menu variety and prices that you will not find in pretentious SB. Have you ever seen Ono (aka Wahoo) on a menu in SB? I rest my case. And you can pick two sides to go with your meal instead of one at Enterprise and none at other places. For about 2/3 the price. Lunch is the same menu for about half price. Try it if you're on 101!

I grew up here and have been a fish eater all my life. We like Enterprise. Is it just Edhatters or what, no sushi? When I think highest quality seafood, I want Sakana or Arigato! As far as eating the highest quality seafood in town, no comparison. For a special event Anniversary, Biltmore dining room is pretty nice and they always have great seafood specials.

For an anniversary dinner, the ambiance counts as much as the food. Enterprise fish strikes out. Waiting for an hour is no fun so Brophy's loses. The Boathouse is OK if the night is warm so you can sit outside. There have been several good places suggested.

Great point about sushi, 552. I'd be all in, but OP said nothing about sushi or crudo (raw), but was interested in lobster. I recommend grilled local spiny, in October when the season opens, my birth month. :-) I of course also indulge in Enterprise specials.

Otherwise, Enterprise is most affordable if you're not DIY.
Seagrass was mentioned in the 2nd post.

490P, if you've been to a restaurant countless times for decades and are always disappointed, why go back?! Going with friends isn't an excuse, you could suggest another eatery. If you're not paying for dinner? Lucky you. Happy to see another subscriber.

Hope to hear back from OP, it must be a crazy busy restaurant night. Happy Anniversary!

552 - To each his/her own. To each his/her taste. When I take my money out on the town I want something at least as good as I can make at home - hopefully better. Enterprise does not use fresh fish from our local boats, it's frozen when it comes in. Everything else is average. Maybe many of the EdHat community just yearn for quality......

Yin Yang - no need to be snarky. I've been a few times by choice (after 38 years), but on the other occasions, they were office related and others were birthday/anniversary/wedding celebrations. "Suggesting another eatery" would be mighty rude, but we all run our lives in the way we see fit.

583, I apologize for the use of an exclamation point. I didn't mean to be snarky. I assumed and did not express clearly that you had gone there against your choice. I do think there are decent dishes, especially the grilled lunch items, but fully respect your opinion. I did react to your mention of "countless times," but I understand how many events are held there. I also readily admit that my income favors an Enterprise dinner as a splurge and Edomasa for sushi, and I have not been out to eat in many months.

RE Seagrass. Roberto (chef and owner) at Seagrass made a big public deal a while back that he will no longer be serving local seafood due to (unfounded) claims of radiation contamination from the tsunami. Hasn't changed his website though.

I'm a tour guide. When someone asks me for a seafood place, I tell them Ca'Dario. I think it's the best fish in town. Also, Paradise cafe always has something fresh on the grill.

My personal choices are based from wanting fresh, local and sustainable foods. Here in SB region we have so many really good options, it comes down to personal taste, style and ambiance as well as $$$.
ArchRock Fish, lunch, calimari BoatHouse, dinner grilled local fresh
Biltmore, dinner local fresh
Brophys, local oysters, clams, nothing fried!

Enterprise is a chain restaurant that started in Santa Monica. Part of really being a local in SB means going to places owned by locals. I give my vote to Brophy's. Haven't had a bad meal there ever, and I actually LIKE the process of getting a beeper and using the wait to walk out to the end of the breakwater and back. I did just go to Chuck's Waterfront Grill for a birthday party, every person at the party was disappointed in their meal (meat & fish) and I see no reason to ever go back.

But Enterprise is a 2-restaurant "chain," Santa Monica and SB. The Habit is a bigger chain. I'm just a fan of Enterprise, and of the larger "chain" of FisHouse, Boat House, SB Shellfish Co.

Hey OP! Where did you go, what did you have, how was it?

LUCKY 777: I had a nice lunch at Brophy's about 35 years ago. It was lovely. A few years ago, with cousins from Scotland, we wanted to celebrate our Anniversary with them. So we went to Brophy's. They gave us a gizmo that would vibrate when out table was ready ... it would take about 10 minutes. I went back twice, and each time it was to be another 10 minutes. By this time it was 9:30 and we had been walking around for an hour and 20 minutes! We gave them back their gizmo and, by phone, made an immediate reservation at another sea food restaurant that isn't there any more. This "10 minute" thing won't work with me any more and I wouldn't go back if you paid me.

I went to Brophy's 30 years ago, when it was John Dory's. Loved it from the first moment.

I still go on occasion but my family from out of town are the real lovers.

For good seafood I'll walk over to Enterprise.

I second Lure in Camarillo. Excellent fish at reasonable prices and friendly service. They said that the Ventura location has the same menu but is more bar oriented.

My recent meal at Enterprise was good however. Appetizers at the bar followed by the lobster special. Lobster bisque is amazing. The lobster was a little soft, maybe needed more time on the grill.
