Scanner Reports 6-16-14
updated: Jun 16, 2014, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Monday-Monday. Will it's that time of the year again, when many of the Students go home for the summer and all the neat FREE things end up on Craigslist. There are numerous couches, bedding, and chairs on there; cookware, desks, even a pool table. Everything one needs to furnish a home. Some of it's donated to other organizations for resale. I remember when it was all just dumped in the trash and hundreds of people would do the yearly Dumpster Diving in IV. Seemed like I was either always working somewhere or didn't have a vehicle at the time when that was going on. I have always loved Dumpster Diving. Even when I was a young'un I loved Dumpster Diving. The things one could find digging in thy Holy Trash. The first thing I ever found digging in someone else's trash was sealed boxes of Model muscle cars, and war planes. Some of the models were from the great "Rat Fink" collection of the 60's. Think of what that might be worth today. Of course that was in 1968; those models are long gone. I never made those models anyway my folks bought me some testers airplane glue and well I liked the smell a little too much. Before I came out here I used to cruise the alleys of Munster Indiana for furnishings to fix up places I lived in. One person's Trash another's Treasure. Of course Trash wasn't the only thing that went into dumpsters. Stolen goods too hot to handle, guns, and people they end up in dumpsters sometimes too.

I found a family's history in a dumpster over here on Milpas when I used to recycle cans and bottles. Their home had been broken into over on East Cota, thousands of dollars taken, but the family history was something no one could replace. I gathered as much as I could and took it to them and told them where the rest was they were able to get a lot of it back. Although I just happened onto these items in the trash I have known for many years when there's a theft nearby sometimes the things the thief don't want ends up in the nearest trash usually.

A friend of mine back in Hammond got his car busted into in the Loop up in Chicago when he was moonlighting as a Fed Ex Driver. During the day he was a school teacher in Gary, Indiana. In the afternoon evening and weekends he drove for Fed Ex. Someone ripped off a briefcase of completed tests he needed to grade and he had to find them. So there we were 3am searching in this parking lot for anything that got taken from his vehicle. I had worked a double shift that day doing security at Pullman Standard. You just didn't sit on your rear working at Pullman Standard that is where Amtrak cars were made in the Day. I was exhausted but within a short period of time after hitting the trash I found everything. Important tip if you ever get your house or car broken into or get robbed break out the rubber gloves. I had a friend who trash picked in Chicago. He was always finding guns and knives, I never found anything like that but I did find a couple Rolex watches and many useful things. When I think of Summer Break in I.V. and all that stuff it's like Treasure in the Trash.

One year I worked out there cleaning apartments and I found a few interesting things I was able to take. One was a box of pennies I found in the dumpster, a case of Everclear 180 proof grain alcohol I gave away, a motorcycle stuck in a wall I got a hundred bucks for just to name a couple things. I had a friend who found 5,000 in cash in a Dumpster in Montecito that was many years ago. He was a Vietnam Vet. He deserved to find that money. Every year at this time I love to scan the Craigslist for freebies. Reminds me of those good old days.
