Skin Cancer Screening
updated: Jun 12, 2014, 6:16 PM

I need to have a skin cancer screening done and am looking for a good dermatologist. Last screening I had done, the Dr. barely even looked at me, like 30 seconds. Thanks.

Suggest that you ask two questions; The name of a good dermatologist and one that is available. I have had good luck with Sansum. I have found some extreme waits elsewhere.

Dr. Logan at Sansum. I generally don't like Sansum, but the dermatology department is excellent and focused on skin cancer instead of Botox and other cosmetic treatments. Another dermatologist missed a bad mole on me, but Dr. Logan caught it. He errs on the side of caution and as a cancer survivor (another kind of cancer), I like that in a dermatologist.

Dr. Richard Hammond. Used to be at Sansum where he did the Mohs procedure on my husband. Same office as Dr. Rebecca Miller recommended above.

Dr. Hammond is my dermatologist, and my husband's. He is excellent, explains things so well, is easy to talk with, genial, professional and even makes it fun.

I am in no way connected to him, just a happy patient. Across from Goleta Valley Hospital 334 S Patterson Ave, Santa Barbara, CA 93111

Another vote for Dr. Novatt.

He's not shy about telling you what to do to protect yourself & is very proactive when it comes to treating every suspect spot on your body. I'm in the "high risk" category due to fair skin and I value his medical judgment to the fullest.

Richard Hammond, MD, on South Patterson. He's a smart guy with good eyes, has been in the business for decades, and is THE Mohs surgeon, if you should wind up needing skin cancer surgery, as I have.

Dr. Van Meter in Goleta. I had Malignant Melanoma 18 years ago. I was in my early 30's and he took excellent care of me. I had to see a plastic surgeon for the surgery but Dr. Van Meter did all the follow up cancer care. I still see him every year and more often as needed. I highly recommend him.

Had a skin cancer concern a few months ago and none of the drs I'd ever heard of or been referred to could see me for months (especially at Sansum!). Got an appt with Dr. Klemperer quickly and found her to be delightful. She spent a long time looking around my whole body, discussing my outdoor habits, took a sample of the concerned spot (thankfully, NOT cancer!) and another suspicious mole. I highly recommend her!

I have never seen him, but I looked up Dr. Novatt since he was recommended to me by friends. For what it is worth, he has gotten some really lousy reviews on Yelp. I am not sure how much stock to put in that, but I thought I would throw it out there.

A second for Dr Logan. My regular (now ex) dermatologist couldn't find time to see me for eight weeks. Logan saw me in a week. Confirmed Melanoma. Set up the sequence of tests and surgery for quick solution. Meantime Logan solved one other skin problem that had baffled the ex dermatologist.

Either Gary Novatt or Mark Logan at Sansum. I used to see Gary when he was at Sansum and have been seeing Mark since then.

I had a regularly scheduled appointment with Mark the morning after returning from a trip. He immediately recognized the signs of a Deep Vein Thrombosis in my right leg and got FAST treatment started. I thought the swelling of my foot and ankle was from a sprain. It's quite possible that he saved my life.

Also, he's a San Marcos graduate.

While I found Dr. Novatt to be a no-nonsense professional, I was not happy with the responsiveness of his office staff. Wait times were long and results of examinations were only communicated after long delays and several phone calls. I consulted Dr. Keith Llewellyn at ALOE Dermatology and was impressed by his skill and dedication and the courtesy and efficiency of his office staff.

Our experience with Dr. Klemperer was great. We have seen her now for about 9 or 10 years. She is throrough and nice. And she has surgeons in the same office if you need a different kind of surgery than what she does. Very convenient and easy to find on Pueblo right across the street from Cottage Hospital.

I have used Novatt in the past until my insurance stop taking him. I had two melanomas, and while I respect his medical knowledge, don't expect a good bedside manner. During one of my mole checks right after having a baby he told me he knows a good Doctor that does tummy tucks!

I currently see Dr. Louise Steward on Bath Street (right across from Cottage), but the wait time for a routine skin exam is about 3 months. The office has also been a mess at times--ie. they lost pictures of my moles, the office staff called my name from the reception area when I was already seated in the exam room (they didn't realize I was there already). I am definitely open to switching! She is very thorough though, and looks between the webbing of your toes, through your hair, etc. Is Dr. Novatt as thorough?

For years my husband has been to several dermatologists at Sansum Clinic for skin cancer treatment, including 3 Mohs procedures. This year he was referred to Dr. Roberta Sengelmann at the Santa Barbara Skin Institute for a Mohs procedure and then eyelid reconstruction by Dr. Taban. Dr. Sengelmann is absolutely the best and she is the only fellowship trained Mohs doctor in town. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a Fellow, American College of Mohs Surgery. She is also an Associate Clinical Professor: UC Irvine Department of Dermatology. She has a wonderful staff too.

Just last week I went to Dr. Leposavic at Sansum for a problem with my scalp. Before I knew it, he took four biopsies from my back, shoulders and arms. I'm now in the waiting mode for the news. My scalp and forehead have age spots mixed with acne, which are treated with mild antibiotics. He has also treated my hidradenitus condition. He is kind and swift to get things done. I'll continue to see him for my weird skin conditions. His staff members were also kind to me the old lady. Only one guy at the nursing station didn't smile. I vote for Dr. Leposavic.

I have had good experience with Dr Louise Stewart. Although you do need lots of lead time for an appointment, I find she is very thorough & if in doubt is not shy to get an opinion from another doctor in the office. Have had no issues with the office staff there, they are very nice & seem well organized. Unfortunately, she no longer takes Anthem Blue Cross, but she will send in the paperwork to your insurance company for you.

Hammond hasn't retired? When he took a large benign cyst off my back (it was like another vertebrae bump, got in my way a little) he joked about stitching up women's vaginas after birth. I've always regretted not reporting him for it. I, the patient, and his nurse, were both female.

my sympathy and empathy to 777 and others. I have chronic non-life threatening skin issues. This kind of discomfort gives the sufferer an idea of what chronic pain is like. Chronic itch and discomfort is bad too.
Novatt. Saw Ford once. I was somewhat cured, got treatments. Heard good things about Leposovic.

I recommend Hammond also. For new patients the waiting time is rather long. Miller isn't taking new patients. When I went to Logan many years ago, he was fairly new and a little too cut -happy for me and my parents. My parents have since returned to him recently and they like him. I think he has matured and isn't so aggressive about turning every little thing into a possible cancer scenario. That's why I like Hammond - common sense with expert experience.

I have never had a problem getting an appt with the derm at Sansum. It is a well run department. Good luck to the OP.
