Potential Scam
updated: Jun 03, 2014, 4:05 PM

Has anyone else who lives Downtown or Mesa area had a guy come by their door claiming to be selling candy to raise funds for a sports program in Compton? It seemed suspicious and he had no brochures or information on him about it. Just checking to see if this is as bogus as it sounds.

It's scam! Report him to the police if he comes to your door.

Dude came to my door in Old Town Goleta last night trying to raise money for a "recovery" program. I swiftly shooed him away. If I wasn't busy I would have called the non emergency police #.

Not to my door, but I came across him in front of the Museum of Natural History this afternoon. Maybe a different person than yours, but same speech. Walked right in front of me so I had to stop forward movement. Had 3 candy bars in a plain brown box. Ten minutes later on my way back, he was gone.

Guy came to my door in Noleta about a week ago...selling candy to raise funds for Women's Shelter. They must ad-lib their pitch depending on the recipient. He didn't hang around when he saw my LARGE black Lab.

This may be more than a scam--sometimes people seeking to burglarize a house knock on the door to be sure no one is home.

A kid from the neighborhood trying to raise funds for their sports team.... okay, I would believe that. But coming all the way from Compton? That's a bit far fetched... no pun intended.

If they were from Compton, just think of all the money they would have saved not wasting all that money on gas.....

Same here in Goleta townhouse complex that has a pretty clear no solicitation sign...very disheveled character supposedly selling flag football jerseys? or maybe raising money for football jerseys? Either way, dogs barked like mad and husband ran him off. Must have been a van load drop-off in town.

If they send the kids to my door I give them a couple of buck so they can get something to eat and send them on their way. No money for the adults though.

They are supposed to get permits to go door to door but I don't think they ever do.

Someone was running that same scam in my neighborhood a year or two ago. Asked them what the money was going to be used for and I guess they forgot because their explanation was just a bunch of rambling incoherent blather.

Who even opens their doors to strangers anymore ???

Isn't this why newer homes are designed with big garage doors as the front entrance to a house ?

We've become a nation of INDOOR PEOPLE.

They come selling magazines and the dark haired boy was here last week. He went away empty handed.

Would you eat a candy bar purchased from someone like that? Would you dare pass it on to someone else? Often van loads of Los Angeles scammers are transported into communties they think are ripe for their scams and dropped off by the driver who later picks them up at some rally point to take them to another neighborhod or to drive back to L.A.

right, and who eats entire candy bars anymore...isn't this why they invented the mini's?

Next time one of these shadys from Compton comes knocking on your door asking for $ it may be wise to show him you live with your friends Smith & Wesson.
