DOG OF THE WEEK

Woody
updated: Jun 07, 2014, 9:00 AM

Woody the pit bull mix came home with us from the shelter in early 2013 to round out our "Variety Pack," which includes Henrietta the beagle (another former shelter dog, who was known at the shelter as "Bailey") and Harvey the chihuahua mix (yet another former shelter dog, who was known at the shelter as "Chocko").

Dad - a K-9 Pals volunteer - fell in love with Woody as soon as he arrived at the shelter. Woody was at the shelter for several months with a little pal who he was bonded to, but when his little pal got adopted, Woody had a tough time and wasn't doing so well at the shelter. Woody may look like a tough guy, but for him, the world can be a pretty scary place. Dad convinced Mom that adding another dog to the menagerie (which already included two dogs, three cats, and chickens) wasn't crazy. Three dogs is, in fact, crazy. But turns out it is also wonderful. Mom and Dad are madly in love with Woody, who is - without question - the best behaved dog of the "Variety Pack." (Don't let Henrietta's sweet face and Harvey's petite package fool you. They are trouble!) Woody will always be a nervous Nellie, but he's much better now that he's at home with his pack. And he has a special bond with Harvey. For Woody, having Harvey by his side is like having a little shot of confidence.

Sorry for the frontal nudity - Harvey has no shame

Below is a video of Woody's first post-shelter outing to the beach. Because he had kept his tail tucked under him for so long, seeing him run and wag and be happy was overwhelming.

And now that his world is a little less scary and he feels safe at home with his pack, the big dude can finally relax… really relax.
