Scanner Reports 6-2-14
updated: Jun 02, 2014, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Monday-Monday. Almost Election Day. I have only missed one election since 1976. I was homeless basically at the time and wasn't allowed to vote. It was ok; my vote wouldn't have counted anyway. I got my mail in ballot a couple weeks back and slowly studied everyone who was running as well as the other stuff. I voted for some, and wrote in a couple cartoon characters for others. I saw a couple negative campaign ads and wrote in Elmer Fudd. I was getting ready to finish it last weekend and send it in when the shooting happened and I totally did not care about the election anymore. The ballot's been sitting on my shelf ever since. I feel like the old ball and chain is off of me, I feel FREE! So I'm not requiring myself to vote this time around, my vote don't count anyway.

Headlines across the online version of the Chicago Tribune on Sunday: "12 Hours of Violence leaves 4 dead and 14 Wounded across Chicago." Every Weekend there are headlines like that in the Tribune; it reminds me of the Sports scores. These are people who have been shot pretty much; there are other acts of violence that result in death that are not included in those headlines. Chicago is a much bigger city than Santa Barbara. A lot of people there own guns. I had a couple when I lived back in Hammond and that was in the 70's. Ask people to give up their guns in Chicago and I doubt you would get much response. Especially from those who have already been victims of violent crimes. I guess I had a lot more hope for World Peace when I was a kid than I do now. I don't think there's a lot of hope for our society to change anymore. Guns are not the only things that kill people in our society there are a host of other weapons, then there's motor vehicles. Accidents do happen but no one wants to slow down, or get off the phone, or stop TEXTING, or give a bicyclist, or pedestrian the right of way. Everyone just wants to blame each other. So all one can do is protect themselves, and their loved ones. As long as there is angry people that think they have been wronged there is going to be violence.

Violence is like a weed to get rid of a weed for good you gotta dig it up and get all of the root, that is the only way to get rid of a weed. Weed killer might work for a month or two but weeds always grow back and so does festering anger. Maybe I'm just not positive enough to believe that our society can be free of violence but I don't believe our society can be free of violence. We have to dig all the way down to the very bottom of those roots, dig em up and out don't leave one piece cause those weeds always grown back, what I'm talking about is doing more than lip service. You gotta work get your hands dirty, dig? Lip service is all I have been seeing in that respect the whole idea of stopping gun violence on a dime now isn't going to work. There is going to be more than there already has been. Maybe we can change our little part of the world at least until it happens again.
