Air & Sea
updated: May 31, 2014, 5:00 PM

By John Wiley

The air and sea power of U.S.S. Reagan was impressive to me as I flew offshore at a respectful distance yesterday. I was probably safe from most small arms fire, but the ship is bristling with innumerable other weapons that would make short work of a small plane half a mile away. In an active conflict zone of course, there would be other weapons at the ready not to mention the whole fleet surrounding and protecting the ship. So it was nice to see her lying relatively relaxed at anchor in front of our bucolic little city. (Incidentally, I taxied past that blue helicopter at SBA, and it was stuffed with what looks like electronic gear.) I wondered why the jet on deck had a crane, then in this full zoom cropped pic I could see the mannequin "pilot" and realized they were setting up a tourist display. The had one helicopter already on display and one cordoned off with equipment, presumably at the ready. The sailors boarding the shore boat were presumably also ready, for some time exploring our little paradise.
