Low Flying Helicopters
updated: May 30, 2014, 10:51 AM

By Edhat Subscribers

  • Low flying helicopters are rattling windows on the Mesa, they've flown by at least 6 times. Any particular reason being broadcast for this? Not really news, just annoying.

  • Private helicopter flying repeatedly over east mesa way too low: less than 200 feet!

An edhat subscriber provided the below video:

  • Mesa Helicopters, video of low flying helicopters.

You said it yourself. It's not really news, it's annoying. Why would any of our stations broadcast anything about it?

With the recent merger of the three news departments we're going to get less and less and less local news.

If it isn't a MAJOR EVENT (UCSB shooting) or an inconsequential sporting event for one of the cherished few high schools, it won't get mentioned on any of our local stations.

Aircraft are permitted to make ear-shattering obtrusive noise because people still think flying is magic, and flying machines are exceptional.

The USS Reagan is anchored, and it's pretty spectacular. They were Rescue choppers, maybe out to get a good view. It was a massive sight to see and I am not bothered by the occasional chopper noise.

Since you're on the Mesa, go check it out!

Aircraft are not permitted to make ear-shattering obtrusive noise. If that helicopter is indeed flying that low you would be able to see its tail number. You can then report it to the airport at 967-7111 if you really feel it is obtrusive. Basic rule: populated areas 1000 feet from person, or vessel.
    Sparsely populated areas 500 feet.

┬ĚHelicopter operations may be conducted below the minimum altitudes set for fixed-wing aircraft.
The reason? The helicopter's unique operating characteristics, the most important of which is its
ability to execute pinpoint emergency landings during power failure. Further, the helicopter's
increased use by law enforcement and emergency medical service agencies requires added
flexibility in the application of many FAA provisions.

I doubt there's anything one can do, because it's a military ship. We have no control over military craft, but sightseeing and crop dusting craft are different. Seems possible that there are sightseeing craft out there.

PLEASE read the cited page first, and click on the links for non-high performance and high performance craft.

I've been resentful of the military helicopter training runs (to SBA/Vandenberg area per Edhat posters) that shake my windows, wake me from shift work sleep and make my pets hide. I'll start complaining, though it's pointless. I just don't understand why they have to fly so low once they reach SB's coastline.

the same blue chopper keeps going around in the same pattern and very low. It looks like he has some kind of camera in the open door, is it Google? Is it connected with the aircraft seems odd if it is, but it is annoying

No - what you people need to understand is that it is both unsafe and disrupting our ability to work. We work from home, and yes, we even have to make phone calls and be able to talk with our customers and business partners. This low flying helicopter has been drowning out our conversation and has been setting off car alarms for the past hour.

If it is legal, then so be it. If not, then yes, we have every right to file a complaint.

Laws are meant to protect us - including protect us from accidents resulting from unsafe operation of a vehicle.

There are reasons that air force bases are placed in deserts. I'm sure they know that coastal areas are the most densely populated. Are training flights made to Santa Maria or other central coast sites that don't have the added traffic burden of a hospital helipad, which I fully support?

White with a little blue and a 3-pronged blue tail, for lack of a better description. What kind of helicopter has that tail? Might be media? TIA
It flew toward airport less than hour ago, just headed back toward ocean front. not its first trips today, obviously, nor the only flights, just the most obvious.

This helicopter is in town patrolling the Aircraft Carrier. It has been flying/orbiting above the carrier all day. Its call sign is Raptor on the radio.

Sorry but I don't get the idea that the ship has given me freedom. Who is the enemy--would the Taliban Navy storm our beaches? We are being conditioned to grotesquely excessive and intrusive military and government intervention in our lives by false fears. The kind of freedom that I value has to do with my right to stop the militarization of the nation and the expansion of the military industrial state. PS I heard the helicopter noises but couldn't see the source. Suspected it might be the tourist stuff but it was unpleasant.

So soon after Memorial Day, too. A lot of people here should spend some time in or with the military, and see just how much they sacrifice, and just how much they do for us, quietly in the background, which allows the rest of us to be fat, dumb, happy, and prosperous. Not just us, either, but people all around the world in need of help. They don't just fight our wars for us.
