Phone Troubles
updated: May 28, 2014, 10:49 AM

Edhat subscribers are reporting various phone issues in Santa Barbara. Are you experiencing any?

  • No landline telephone service on the east side. We have Verizon. Anyone else experiencing problems?

  • I've been trying to reach Sansum all morning and I can't get through. I've tried my land line and my mobile, so I know it's not my phones (I'm also able to reach other numbers). I've tried the pediatrics line, the urgent care line, and the 1-800 number. Is anyone else having trouble reaching them?

Our company has landlines completely down on W. Carrillo St. and E. Cota. Also can't get through on our cells to other landlines in the city, but not all. What's up Santa Barbara City and/or providers - keep us notified please!

I talked a Verizon contact who confirmed that they are having a major problem with their switch downtown and it is affecting cell phone and landline service in this area. I cannot tell you exactly what service is affected for what types of calls, but the effects appear to be pretty comprehensive.

You can definitely continue to make 911 calls from campus phones, however. And, of course, campus to campus calls work. Calls to the local area appear to be hit or miss at best, and you should be able to complete at ;east some types of long-distance (toll) calls.

As and if we hear more, I will update this list. I’d appreciate it if you distributed this note; that will be a lot faster way of getting this info out than us responding to individual queries.

Received the following email from our IT Dept:

Our telco provider tw telcom is experiencing an area outage. That means you will have trouble dialing out and receiving outside calls. At this time, we do not know the cause so there is no ETA. I will update you as I receive more information.

Being in earthquake country, an outage like this doesn't offer much confidence in Verizon's system should a real emergency arise. Not much of a backup plan it seems. Increase in profits for the corporation, though.

We have business lines with Cox Cable in the Goleta area. Since about 10am we are able to receive calls from a land line, but not from cell phones. We have tried sprint, AT&T, and T-mobil phones. I put a call into Cox cable, but am not sure if that's who the problem would be. This thread seems like every phone company all over Goleta & SB are having troubles. Not sure what to do, but our phone lines are very valuable to the business.

The Grand Jury in conjunction with Emergency Management need to look into this to see if there are ways to make communications more reliable and robust. Apparently the town depends on "the central office" for landline service. It's very good we have competing independent cell providers.
