Woke up to dogs barking and loud yelling outside of my apartment near camino del sur and el colegio in isla vista around 1:35 am.. Anyone know what happened? Sounded like several people ( I am assuming cops) yelling get down on the ground and several dogs barking.

I heard the police cars, dogs barking, and people yelling from Patterson. Hard to believe I could hear the same thing 3 miles away!

I think that after what happened on Friday night that everyone is going to be a bit hyper sensitive in IV for a little bit, including the police. There will probably be more parents wanting welfare checks on their kids that have mental illnesses and more people reporting other students that they think are strange. PTSD is going to be an issue for a lot of people in IV too. Hoping that what can be learned from what happened IS learned, mental illness and threats to hurt others need to be taken more seriously and we need to keep a closer eye on each other and if you see someone degrading, like this kid surely was, then something needs to be done.

I read much of his "manifesto." On several occassions he claims he told people about his desire for murderous "revenge." Everybody who knew this guy and heard his rantings should have reported him to police immediately.

He met with so many "professionals," it's amazing nobody had him committed. Everybody just listened to his rantings and went about their business, apparently.

We do not live in a police state; most of us prefer it that way; most of us, too, unfortunately, imo, do not want serious gun control; the down sides are that sometimes terrible things happen.

Thank you 2218 for that bit of compassionate and thoughtful commentary.

Yes, people will be and should be more vigilant about suspicious activities as well as call in the public resources there to police and prevent unwanted illegal activities.

281P - Most of us DO want serious gun control.Chris Martinez's father was right. We have politicians who are bought and paid for by the NRA. Money talks. We need to band together and just stop voting for anyone who is opposed to serious gun control no matter what party! The NRA money needs to stop talking and We The People need to start.

People using guns kill people. This is because guns are tools created to kill things. What a revelation.

What I am most interested in is how the mighty have fallen and now these same people who defied and attacked those same Police Officers in April are now almost literally the same ones who are begging for their help.

WHY cant order be restored in Isla Vista? This has been an issue for several years now. With the election just a week away, one has to ask "what has gone wrong".

WHY did the Sheriffs Departement arrest the roomate of this mentally insane person for stealing 20 bucks worth of candles. WHY didnt the Psych team eval. the killer back in April after his VERY own mother expressed major concern over her son's behavior?

Sandra Brown who is running for Sheriff has said from day one, one of her many goals is to restore safety in Isla Vista. How awful this horrid scene mush have been for our first responders, coroner's, medics, students, family, teachers, more over our Community .

We need new leadership now! Del Topia was NOT a success! 6 Sheriff deputies sustained injuries. We cannot afford do lose anymore Deputies period.

BEACHBUMMER: Do NOT make sweeping judgements about medicated people. A lot of people function well in society BECAUSE they take medication. And it all falls apart when they don't. I work @UCSB and see this far too often. Kids with disorders and illnesses go away to college. Many of these kids got through elementary and high school because they had a lot of help, at school and at home. Away from home, there is no one to monitor them, check on them. They stop taking their meds, sell them, stay out all night, drink, do drugs, be irresponsible. They want to be typical kids. There is no support network, no safety net. We need to be addressing the mental health of all our kids. And for some, medication just may SAVE a life.

Beachbummer: apparently he had been prescribed meds but refused to take them. I've worked with many mentally ill people and, on meds, they do well and are not violent. Off meds, their illness can take over and sometimes lead to violence due to delusional thinking. Our mental health system is broken when a concerned parent calls the authorities and all they do is interview the person, without also looking at what concerned the parents in the first place.

Meds... But did he drug his roommates with his meds so they could be killed? How could he off three at once without them fighting back. It's not normal for 19 yr. olds to be sleeping at 9p.m. on a friday night! He must have had something real strong to put them out. Creepy that he slipped through the cracks after all his cries for help with his publications on internet! Even though he posted in an evil way it was still a silent cry for help to stop him. PTSD for sure is cropping up for lots, I hope all people who need help can get it.
