Rodger's Parents Searched For Son
updated: May 25, 2014, 11:20 AM

CNN is reporting that as Elliot Rodger began his shooting spree in Isla Vista on Friday evening, his parents were racing to find their son after just receiving his 140 page manifesto. Rodger allegedly emailed a dozen people his chilling personal document, including his parents and a therapist.

Simon Astaire, the Rodger's family friend and lawyer, stated that Rodger's mother, Li Chin, saw the email at 9:17 p.m. PST and immediately went to his YouTube channel. That's when she saw her son's latest video, infamously titled "Retribution," that he posted on Friday, the day of the shootings. The 6+ minute video along with the manifesto detailed Rodger's frustrations and plans to carry out a "slaughter" of UCSB sorority girls.

Li Chen then called Rodger's father, Peter, who had not yet seen the video or read the manifesto. She then dialed 911 and the two drove to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles. While driving they heard of the shooting and later learned their son was behind it.

Alan Shifman had also issued a previous statement on Saturday: "The Rodger family offers their deepest compassion and sympathy to the families involved in this terrible tragedy... We are experiencing the most inconceivable pain, and our hearts go out to everybody involved."

Elliot Rodger's parents had called the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department requesting a welfare check of their son earlier this year. On April 30, 2014 Deputies from the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office contacted Elliot Rodger at his residence following the request. Deputies found him to be polite and courteous while he downplayed concerns. He expressed difficulty in his social life and the Deputies reviewed options and resources. Rodger also expressed that he would most likely not be returning to school here next year. Deputies determined he did not meet criteria for an involuntary mental health hold and cleared the call. In Rodger's manifesto he states that if the Deputies would have searched the apartment, his murderous plan would have been ruined.
