I Madonnari 2014
updated: May 24, 2014, 4:00 PM

By David Powdrell

The artists are here, the artists are here!

Saturday morning, May 5, 2014, 7:00 a.m. The first day of the annual I Madonnari chalk art festival is under way. Armed with chalk, chairs, brooms, masking tape, gloves, snap lines, knee pads, water, mops, cardboard scraps, convex lenses, tripods, working drawings and more, they've arrived.

Most interesting, from my perspective, was that the artwork from last year's event was still visible on the asphalt, the effects of minimal rain in the last year. I think that's a first for the event.

How the artists are able to transform common black asphalt into world class artistic masterpieces using only colored chalk as their medium consistently knocks my socks off.

I highly recommend you take a stroll up to the Santa Barbara Mission and check out the art and the artists. Best bet is to get there crack of dawn or late afternoon when the tour buses aren't there. The artists will be here through Monday and but masterpieces will remain until weathered away. Proceeds from the event support the non-profit Children's Creative Project, which provide art-related assistance to over 50,000 children at over 100 schools in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Very cool.
