Quadcopters Watching Over You
updated: May 23, 2014, 1:40 PM

By John Palminteri

Those light weight remote control quadcopters are quite the buzz these days. Some people use them for fun, but the Santa Barbara County Fire Department is using one owned by Education Officer Mike Eliason on specific assignments. Already it has flown over the Miguelito fire in Lompoc, the Deltopia Isla Vista street party and Amgen bike race. It can be used on Search and Rescue calls, vegetation fires for the initial size up, and when vehicles are over the side of a cliff. They are small, fast, and equipped with a camera that can transmit an image back to an Iphone mounted to the controller. Samy's camera store says the quadcopters are one of the more popular items they have in stock. The employees urge customers to learn how to use them safely and responsibly. Laws on quadcopters, where they can go, and what is a violation, are still being refined.
