Unsweetened cocoa (not alkalized) in unsweetened hot almond milk. Cocoa has lots of zinc (good for colds), magnesium, etc.

Keep off sugar.

Dealing with symptoms... Acetaminophen is probably best.

For dealing with the actual cold though... extra water, extra sleep, some zinc, and vitamin C overdosing. Oh and no sugar outside an apple.

Fresh ginger tea with a two finger pinch of thyme, dash of cayenne, juice from one lemon, and honey in a giant mug. yum!

Grapefruit seed extract does wonders, as well.

I don't get colds anymore. But when I did, the best thing to do is drink plenty of liquids (avoiding sugary drinks and dairy products), eat raw fruits and vegetables only and stay active without doing anything strenuous.

Using a humidifier at night works wonders, as does flushing out your sinuses at least twice a day with a neti pot filled with warm saline. Ahhh! Breathe easier, feel better soon!

This is my true remedy and I am not being silly.
A vitamin c packet with very little water, one Vicodin for the aches and pain, and a good DVD to watch!

Second Sojourner Café, although I like "Yogi Tea" and am pretty sure "Oven Cleaner" is not a name on the menu.
Also, a neti nasal rinse (or several through the day) works wonders for me every time. If you've never heard of it, ask at a pharmacy or health food store.

Buy yourself a Neti pot and some special grade sea salt and rinse out your nasal passages. Works for me.

I drink as much OJ as I can. Keep drinking even though your body may say no. Seems to help me get over colds quicker than not doing anything.

Fighting a cold right now. Living off of chicken noodle soup, throat lozenges, diet ginger ale, NyQuil, and GALLONS of fluids. Some Angry Birds or a Big Bang Theory marathon doesn't hurt to pass the time!

The second I feel like I might start coming down with something, I start taking Wellness Formula. You can get it at Lazy Acres or Whole Foods. It has garlic, and lots of herbs. I take it for a few days, and the cold (or worse) never takes hold.

"Diet" anything is not helping you. Too many chemicals used to replace that sugar. Take your ginger ale straight or not at all. Tea with sliced ginger, maybe? And Nyquil? Ugh.

I haven't tried this and don't know if it really works, but my parents swear by Cold-Eeze. They say if they feel a cold coming on, they take some, and it often staves off the cold.

Zinc is great for the sore throat and stuffy nose.

Also a good toddy right before bed (only if you tolerate alcohol):

a shot of scotch
a teaspoon of honey
the juice from one lemon
a cup of boiling water

You will sleep like a baby and feel better in the morning!

[Braggs] Apple Cider Vinegar & Honey. 1 TBSP each in glass of water and drink 2-3 times a day. Good for prevention and during a cold.

I can't post links, but go to Bragg dot com and under the Health Info menu, look at recipes.

Two steps:

POUND water (with numerous visits to the bathroom acting as an indicator for how well you're doing).

Get 8+ hours of SLEEP per night.

I used to get colds that would last for 2-4 weeks at a time. I once estimated that I was sick for 7 months over the course of a year. I wasn't exactly an unhealthy individual either, I just didn't recover from colds well.

Now if I get a cold (rarely), getting proper sleep and pounding water gets me over it in 1-2 days. Nothing else is necessary.

I don't get sick really ever, it's all about diet, exercise & environment.

For those that do:

Prevention - drink distilled water with 1/2 teaspoon liquid trace minerals & 1/2 teaspoon colloidal silver, 1-3 times daily.

Cure - 3-5 tablespoons colloidal silver daily, dandelion tea with honey & lemon until symptoms gone.

339P, the "oven cleaner" probably isn't on the Soj menu, but someone who's been around a while can make it. The ingredient list includes, but not limited to: apple juice, unsweetened cranberry juice, garlic, touch of cayenne, ginger, cinnamon, chunk of apple, etc.

Hot orange juice with honey in it. My Sister swears by it. At the very least, it may make your throat feel better.

Watch out for nasal Zicam stuff, if it still exists. I took that several years ago, and I swear I can barely smell things anymore. I can only smell extreme smells, like blooming jasmine, perfume, strong cooking smells, and, heh, poop and pee. But subtle smells are kinda lost on me now.

I heard smell and memory are deeply intertwined, so maybe that's why life's been a blur for the past several years, lol! That and I'm a parent of a 6 year old... and that sleep deprivation will totally mess with your memory.

The one good thing about what happened to my nose: changing my son's diapers never made me gag. :)

Drink apple cider vinegar at least once a week if not daily then you won't really have to get sick again. If you do get sick keep drinkin it, I'm talking about a shot a day not a whole serving. In addition use a couple drops of colloidal silver in your water cup, tea, hot water with lemon etc. squirt some honey in your throat. Gargle with hydrogen peroxide deep in the throat. Eat a bunch of fruit. Clean your ears out really well and flush your nose with a Neti pot. There I just gave my full secret away. I do this once a year when I randomly get ill and I don't stay sick more than a day or two. I wasn't gonna share my remedy but I love seeing people get healthy.

People have been suggesting lots of water but you can get too much and cause yourself other medical problems. And could even die from it.

Avoid water intoxication. Keep intake to below a gallon of any liquids a day.

Wiki water intoxication for more info.

Mix about a tablespoon of salt into some warm water and put it up one side of your nose and out the other. Do it several times & reverse directions. I've killed colds in the making by doing this. Germs can't survive in a salt environment. And of course, getting enough sleep helps enormously.

As someone who hasn't gotten sick in years, I just got struck with the same head-cold that morphed into the mother of all sinus infections; the same thing that people are mentioning here. I thought I was immune. Guess I'm human after all. Damn.
I would avoid adding salt to warm water, and would suggest buying a neti pot and NeilMed saline packets (don't buy the CVS knock-off brand - as it smells like burnt broccoli). Drink plenty of water, get rest, eat right. One of my personal favorites is Trader Joes French Market Sparkling Lemonade. I've had this head cold for 2 weeks now and it still hasn't passed, but I am getting better every day.

For a bad cold, I use the same cocktail as 461. The brand name of diphenhydramine is Benadryl. It's quite a sedative, as well. I buy them all separately so I can take each as needed. Prefer ibuprofen as it does not harm the liver like acetominophen, though some people are sensitive to it as to aspirin. I'm prone to sinus and ear infections so to keep the congestion down I take pseudoephedrine, though with the new drug contol laws you have to buy it at the pharmacy counter and they swipe your driver's license to keep track of you (meth head!). The alternative is phenylephrine (in most "cold medicine" now), but it's not nearly as effective as pseudoephedrine for me.

I snort salt in warm water. Also eat chicken soup, warm water, ginger tea, and curry! OJ too, though too much is too yang.

And Turner Classic Movies, Big Bang Theory, or those pulp fiction shows on USA. And sleep.

Depends on the type of cold..... Like what the symptoms are.....

Coconut oil with tea tree oil on the chest for congestion.

Shots of apple cider vin at start of cold help me. It's nasty as hell, but works if you can keep in down. Lol

I second the fresh ginger tea, with lemon and spices. Works here too!

Linus Pauling discovered in the early 60s that Vitamin C destroys virus particles. Since that time I take 500 mg twice daily (more if I sense exposure) and never! get flu or colds.
I have even brought dying pets back to life with large i.v. doses of it. It is truly a miracle product! Anti-inflamatory AND anti-viral. What more could we ask?

I'm another devotee of Cold Eeze. I start sucking a lozenge at the VERY FIRST sign of a cold (for me, that's a really sore throat) and continue throughout the days as directed. It's important to catch it very early and be careful to space out any OJ or citrus fruits leaving 4 hours on either side of sucking on the lozenge. It's worked like magic for me for over 10 years.

Saline Spray right away and daily to keep your nose clean, yea you'll never be ill again! We put a bit of lavender oil in it, just a drop or 2, truly helps before, after and in-between for allergies.
