Rocky Galenti Art
updated: May 20, 2014, 11:30 AM

By Dan

Has anyone saved any of the caricature artwork from the Rocky Galenti's bar located in the California Hotel? I met my partner there 30 years ago. We finally decided to get married! It would be so great to be able to find a chunk of the wall as a wedding gift.

Probably should have started this hunt a while ago. Best of luck. I spent hours there, dancing to Mojo.

Don't remember the wall art. Please share, if you do locate that chunk.

Since the caricatures were of locals, I imagine they may have had the opportunity to claim them when Rocky's closed, just guessin'

If you cant track them down maybe you can hire a caricature artist for your wedding reception? You can have your own wall of your wedding guests instead of random Santa Barbarians. It will have the Rocky's feel, but will serve as a wedding memento for you both!

I forget his name but I think I saw the cartoonist who did those drawings in town not too long ago. He was living in an RV near Costco at one time. I bet he is still around and someone here knows where he is...maybe he'd do one of you and your fiancee.

Is it the same guy who used to work at the Sunday Art Show (Cabrillo Blvd). He was one talented man.

I think it is the same artist who worked the Sunday Art Show. His name is Michael and I think he may still be at the Art Show on occasion.

That bar was amazing! The ocean breeze with all of those huge open windows, the pool tables - and those caricatures! I lived in SB Harbor for a few years, that bar was the best because it meant staying on ocean side of 101. Downtown seemed like some other far away place. Man I miss that bar.

The artist was named Lloyd, and I saw him a while back around upper State with his same tiny dog. When he did a caricature of someone for the walls or ceiling, he gave the original to them.
I still have mine.

Lloyd was indeed the artist who did the caricatures at Rocky Galenti's. Lloyd was my friend. He passed away this year and will be missed. I'm Michael and I am the artist who is still drawing caricatures at the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show along Cabrillo Blvd. Sundays year 'round. I've been there since 1980 believe it or not. I do weddings, too!

Great memories! One of the best was seeing George Thoroughgood (Thorogood?) stroll in one night and really get the joint hopping! One minor correction, he spelled his name Llloyd, with 3 "L's" to be different. He was quite the charicature character and is missed.

Oh no, Llloyd passed away? He was a great unique character - fascinating guy - I thought about him recently and wondered how he was doing - I regret not calling him - he seemed so healthy - he was a standup comedian who once toured with his ex wife who was a magician - he always had a joke chambered - many fascinating stories - he did a caricature of me and my dog spontaneously once - I met him at the YMCA where he used to belong - he said that he also hung out at a restaurant downtown and did caricatures there - I was not living here in the California Hotel days yes he lived in his RV that was parked at a friend's house or something - he had a very cute little dog that he really loved - I hope the dog is doing well - any other info that people have on him please do post! So sorry that he passed away - he has a couple of kids living outside of the area I believe.

Yes - "Llloyd (Kavich) the Artist" passed away sadly a few months ago - He kept 2 small dogs, I can hear him calling them now asking them to perform various tricks! -- the first dog he called Streamline! after she died he quickly got another but I can't remember that name- he trained both to sit perched on his head, so hilarious! I think Rocky's wall was destroyed when they remodeled it. He was the most cheerful person I met in SB besides Captain George and his stories were priceless. He came to my birthday party, drew caricatures of each guest I invited. Llloyd is greatly missed by many. He stayed in his RV parked at the Schul at the Loschaks home in Goleta until the end of his life. His sister kept his dog. I must tell the Rabbi about this thread that folks are talking about our friend Llloyd the Artist! You will find Youtube videos if you google him. Michael is also a great caricaturist - you should have him do a drawing for your wedding!

My father did some work for Lloyd in the 60's and he was paid in art. I have several paintings by Lloyd Kavich that were painted in the same time period. I am interested in selling some... not all. If anybody here is interested, I should be available in August. I am out of the country until then. You can contact me directly.

What a great time I had there on Sundays! Don't remember one bit of it, but it was fun, is the building still there?
