May 18, 2014 - Cooling Down

Who else is excited that Santa Barbara's weather is returning to normal? The heat and extreme temperature for our area this week were pretty exhausting! The dedicated staff took many breaks lying on the floor with ice packs around their necks. Unfortunately, we don't have air conditioning but several fans and a cooler filled with ice did the trick. Thanks to the edhat community for sending in photos of how they kept cool this week, our favorite had to be the homemade AC unit with a fan and styrofoam cooler, very clever. We even heard from some subscribers in the Mission Canyon area that temperatures reached as high as 106 degrees! According to several weather websites and our local meteorologists, we should expect low to mid 70's for the next few days, a much needed break. Enjoy the beach, the palm trees, and the breeze this weekend, we all deserve it.

Our Dog of the Week is Zoee, that's with two e's and she will correct you. Our Cat of the Week is Frankie, a kitty who proves that having eye sight is overrated. Our Non-Profit of the Week is AHA! the Academy of Healing Arts who is hosting their Sing It Out event tonight! Betsy shares the quirky news from 100 years ago in Santa Barbara, the dedicated staff enjoyed an event benefitting the San Marcos Parent-Child Workshop, local writer Daniel Wallock shares an excerpt from his book, the Scarface mansion is for sale so get your money out from under the mattress, and edhatters guess the location of a historical photo.

---- Edhat Stuff ----------------------------------

HISTORY: A subscriber is curious if edhatters can determine the location of this historical photo.

The Santa Barbara mansion featured in the film " Scarface" is now on the market for $35 million.

BOOK CLUB: Local 18-year-old writer Daniel Wallock shares an excerpt from his book, "Right-Hearted: Finding What's Right with a Wrong Sided Heart."

EDBIT: The dedicated staff spent a lovely Saturday evening at San Marcos Parent-Child Workshop's 25th Annual Fundraiser, "Sip, Sample, and Savor."

Way Back When: May 1914 was a heck of a month — men bowled in their skivvies, dressed in drag, and LA was on the brink of destruction.

NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: Academy of Healing Arts (AHA!) serves teens and families year-round with programs in Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, and Goleta.

DOG OF THE WEEK: Meet Zoee, a sweet and loving boxer.

CAT OF THE WEEK: Meet Frankie, a blind but active cat.
