Alternative Care Doctor
updated: May 15, 2014, 11:15 AM

I'm looking for an alternative care doctor for a pinched nerve(?) in my lower back, with pain going down the leg. I do not want to be a guinea pig any longer, and continue to be put on different medications to "see what will work". Thank you for any help you can offer!

On recommendation of integral med. MD, got relief for a bad pinched nerve and debilitating lower back pain with Dr. Kevin Fischer (chiropractor) on Arrellaga.

Dr. Kahman really helped me with my back surgery. Also try Dr. Frecker, in SB for a nerve Conduction Study. Good luck. Its the worse pain 24/7.

Having had sciatica and having grown to distrust chiropractors, I go to a good physical therapist at Elite. I have found it was quite fixable in physical therapy. And then follow by doing pilates in a small class with an observant teacher for maintenance.

There are many good therapists in town. Whatever you do, pay attention to your body and give feedback to the therapist about how the work is helping/not helping and what you notice about your own body. Avoid shots and quick "fixes" by doctors or surgery. Mostly I have found my problems (sciatica and other back type stuff) were produced by muscle imbalances and weakness -- even when it severely felt like a nerve.

Best of health - from someone who once could not sit through a meal for sciatica/back stuff and who was diagnosed with stenosis, bulging disk, ruptured disk, you name it, from an MRI. If I ever had that stuff, it is no longer a factor in my life.

I've had that and MDs begrudgingly told me to see a Chiropractor. I had a couple of great ones in LA but I moved and they retired. I tried over a dozen here in SB over they years with great disappointment. Then I saw Dr. Gary Kurilla D.C. who uses muscle feedback and the results were amazing.
Be aware that the first session will aggravate it and you'll feel/look like you've been beaten but by the 3rd session the relief will be substantial and that is the great part. He can relieve most conditions in 4 appointments, he's not one of those "see me twice a week the rest of your life" types.

I recommend acupuncture. It's saved my life. For a chiropractor, Charlie Bissell in the upper village in Montecito is excellent and fair prices.

Equinox Naturopathic Medicine in the basement of the Lobero Building, Anacapa St.

A friend of mine got treatment there last year for a very similar condition, which was giving him severe pain to the extent he could barely walk. Within weeks, the problem was healed and he has been pain free since.

I second Dr. Kevin Fisher (not Fischer), chiropractor and sports medicine guy. He will treat you a few times (won't drag it out forever), and if you ask, he will give you simple exercises to help prevent the sciatica from recurring. Whoever you go to, be sure to ask for exercises. I wish I had seen Kevin first, instead of suffering through a year of standard medicine that didn't help.

Dr. Brian Jones is great. He will give you a free consultation and has been very successful in using natural resources to treat his patients. Even better, he has a warm and caring personality and will take the time to listen to all of your history and symptoms.

Dr. Jim Cochran. He's a chiropractor and has this new state of the art adjusting tool called an Impulse iQ. If you're afraid of getting cracked, that new tool does wonders. I was in a car accident and it has helped me immensely.

Get the right muscle exercises and exercise, exercise, exercise to strengthen the core of your body. Water suspension with light weights on the lower body helps to take the compression off the spine from gravity. I was unable to walk from back pain and weakness after a chipped disc occurred one morning. I crawled for a week before I could even think of physical therapy, which I had never taken before. Nevertheless, I was pain-free in half a year with a strict daily exercise regimen (and running scared from the threat of surgery) between Active Physical Therapy and going to the the Vista del Monte therapy/suspension pool three times a week; and to the regular warmed pool -- daily.

Dr. Archie Allen - Chiropractic/Kinesiology/Homeopathy. He is a master; a skilled and caring holistic healer...experienced, intuitive, gifted. Miklos Hubay for Acupuncture is also a master; very skilled, experienced and treated my sciatica with great success. If you see both Dr. Allen and Miklos Hubay - you will have excellent results on all levels.

Check your insurance book for pre-approved providers and go from there. Sometimes it's the luck of the draw and who you connect with. Some of those MD's mentioned, I've seen and could tell that they couldn't have cared less yet someone else says "He's the best!". Go figure.

(A bit of self promotion going on here.)

Bastomski on upper state st was my life saver. His work got me out of a wheelchair from a pinched nerve paralizing my right leg. Unfortunately SS insurance says no. So I paid cold cash just to be able to walk again. And a lot of home therapy to rejuvenate the leg. Still use a walker due to balance issues. But that is easier than a wheelchair on SB sidewalks.
