WWII Historic Planes Photos!
updated: May 14, 2014, 4:55 PM

By Robert Bernstein

Historic World War II planes that actually were involved in combat were at the Santa Barbara Airport this week thanks to the Collings Foundation.

Planes included the P51B Mustang and the B24 and B17 bombers.

For a small fee locals were encouraged to climb aboard and see the airplanes from the inside. And for a larger fee, people could go up for local rides of a half hour or for an hour.

And for a few thousand dollars it was possible to do a "training flight" of an hour out toward Santa Ynez in the P51B. My mentor Virgil Elings described his training flight which included loops by the pilot. And rolls that he controlled himself! Quite a training flight for a first time pilot!

Here are my photos!

Watch for this to return sometime in the future!

Best wishes, Robert
