Go on 'Kayak' to see offerings from many hotels and sources (Priceline, Travelocity, etc.) in one convenient location for comparison.

Then, choose and book.

Easy, peasy...

You might look under "Vacation Rentals" on Craigslist. Do check out any you are considering but you'll find decent prices and some nice places of all sizes and locations.

Edhat posted an article recently about Airbnb, that's a good option for long term stays. http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?nid=133495

VRBO is another option.

Hotels.. Presidio hotel, Lavender inn, avania.. there are a lot of decent ones at West Beach that aren't too pricey.

Santa Barbara Swap on FB has the following post:

Camp out in style for 4-6 weeks! Empty, 2 bdrm house available from June 15th-July 30th. You'll have hot water, full kitchen, full bathroom, fenced yard. Bring your own sleeping bags, air mattress, and chairs! Must rent for at least 4 weeks. $1800 for full six weeks (that's only $42 a night), or $1200 for the month of July. Located in a quiet neighborhood in the beautiful San Roque area! Perfect for visiting families in a budget!

As SBSURFERLIFE said, airbnb and VRBO are great options. You can search their sites based on budget and number of guests. Usually a bit more affordable than hotels and the guests can save money on dining if they rent something with a kitchen.

I have rented from both vrbo and homeaway. I would choose either of them over craigslist. There are guarantees with the others that you just don't get with craigslist.

Ramada Limited on Calle Real near Turnpike or the South Coast Inn (Best Western) on Calle Real near Kellogg in Goleta are both very nice and quite reasonable.

444- the catch is the house is empty of furniture. But really, not such a bad idea.

Ditto: airbnb.com
Depending on age and character, you could also consider for this person a house exchange, house sitting, pet sitting. It beats high summer rental fees.

IV always has summer sublets.
