Sip, Sample, and Savor 2014
updated: May 17, 2014, 12:00 PM

By The Dedicated Staff

The dedicated edhat staff spent a lovely Saturday evening at the Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church attending San Marcos Parent-Child Workshop's 25th Annual Auction and Gala, "Sip, Sample, and Savor." From 4-7 pm, locals gathered to enjoy tasty treats and beverages, take in the beautiful views, and bid on numerous must-have items.

Upon entering, guests checked in and received an auction number to bid with, were given drink tickets, and handed auction guidelines and procedures.

The main room was set up with many tables piled high with the silent auction items, which included kids' costumes and toys, jewelry, numerous certificates local restaurants and services, skincare products and spa treatments, wine tastings, and vacation retreats. Auction highlights included Disneyland tickets, whale watching for two on the Condor Express, a historic photo of SB circa 1914 printed on aluminum, and a certificate to Andersen's Danish Restaurant and Bakery (who were there with a plethora of desserts, including a delectable éclair.)

There was also a raffle for a iPad 4, a money lotto where the winner of the drawing divided the proceeds with SMPCW, and a section called "Gifts to Grow On" which featured a wish list compiled by the teachers of items one could sponsor.

There was a three-piece band playing, the Geyer/Drummond Trio, whose jazzy numbers and occasional Beatles cover provided the perfect background music to the festivities.

Circulating the room, attempting to try all the tasty samples and small sips proved difficult but we think we were successful. There were plenty of alcoholic beverages but also coffee courtesy of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and Lori's Original Lemonade. (Water was a bit hard to come by, though.) The drink tickets entitled each person to a Silver Wines tasting, Telegraph Brewing Company beer, a glass of wine, Excalibur Hard Cider, and a spirits tasting of vodka, gin, and Apple Pie Liqueur. If you haven't had the opportunity to try Cutler's Artisan Spirits, we highly recommend you do! Mr. Ian Cutler's distillery is in the Funk Zone right next to Figueroa Mountain - maybe stop by for a tasting of your own.

We also filled up on good foods from Brasil Arts Café, Organic Soup Kitchen, The Fresh Market, Del Pueblo Café, and Delgado's Mexican Food, just to name a few. Several tables had gluten free items as well. There could have been more tables set up to pause at but people were busy milling about, placing bids, and socializing. What tables there were had white roses in wine bottles and platefuls of strawberries!

A few hours into the shindig, a nice slideshow of the many smiling faces of the San Marcos Parent-Child Workshop was put on, reminding everyone who will be benefiting from this special event. The fundraiser looked to be a huge success for the preschool, which is in its 54th year!
