Organic Beef
updated: May 11, 2014, 8:00 PM

Whole Foods is generally my source for organic ground beef, so I was very surprised when I went in yesterday and they had none available. The butcher said that organic beef is a seasonal item for them and they won't have it in stock for maybe another 6 months !? They do have other beef available but it is not organic. Is there anywhere else in town that carries organic ground beef?

Ralphs even carries it now.

Lazy Acres - for sure. Even some of the chain markets are beginning to carry organic meats.

Farmers' Market, Rancho San Julian beef. Not sure it's "certified" organic, but talk to them, the way they raise and feed the cattle is impressive.

Costco has organic hamburger and chicken. Not sure about other options; haven't looked for them.

Try the new marketplace at Victoria and Chapala.

Rancho San Julian is local grass fed and sells at SB Farmers Market. I don't eat beef but it's the best.

Trader Joe's sometimes has it. Also, the new place in the Public Market, Belcampo, amazing.

I would bet that the new Fresh Market on Montecito Street and Milpas has organic beef. This is where the old Scolari's market once was. They have a beautiful butcher's department and bakery and deli too.

I have a source but sharing it is too risky because if everybody used it, the price would go up.

Most of the large supermarket chains now carry it too.

Can't beat Rancho San Julian, Saturday Farmers Market; the same family has owned the ranch for 175 years, raising beef in their time honored tradition. In Carpinteria I get it at Albertsons, Vons down here also carries it.

Read your labels. Grass fed does not automatically mean organic.

Ralph's downtown. It's underneath the butcher case. Not a huge selection but there is some steak and ground. Not to badly priced either. Glad more people are buying organic. It tells the stores it's worth carrying.

Gelson's is awesome for organic beef and meat in general - it is more expensive but well worth it. I like that they have a healthy variety of specialty, gourmet and regular commercial items. I'm not super fussy about beef...it just has to have marble on it for me to like it.

Ralph's charges $1 more per pound than Rancho San Julian for the natural/organic(?) ground beef. Go local and save money!
