Doggy Dental
updated: May 12, 2014, 2:15 PM

I'm fostering a dog for a recue in Orange County, and he has a broken tooth that probably needs to be removed. Their regular vet charges $150 plus extra for extractions. Can anyone recommend someone closer in that price range before I drive all the way down there?

If you are fostering for a rescue, have you asked the rescue if they will cover the cost partial or wholly? They may have a fund that covers incidentals like a broken tooth.

Dr. Wallace at Airport Animal Hospital. He's the best.

I always thought the Rescue organization will cover all expenses.

It sounds as if the rescue is covering the bill. The OP is just looking for a vet that is closer to home and will do it for around the same price the OC vet will ($150).

Very unhappy with airport animal hospital. After going to their facility for many years, I believe Care animal hospital is progressive, young and friendly staff. I'm going back there again and again

Have you tried the Humane Society? Not sure if they do this - but it's worth a phone call.

i need to do the same for my owned dog...likely need to go to LA CONCEPTION ANIMAL HOSPITAL in Goleta (Dr. Dalo) for other reasons. Would be happy to go "together" and ask that he do both of our for a good price. He helps out SB shelter dogs alot.

Many of the local hospitals work with non profits, but you will need to have the rescue make the contact. But, you are not going t get a dental surgery in SB for $150! CARE is really for emergency care only, you don't want to go there for routine dental, tooth extraction, etc. That would really not be a good use of the rescue's money or the CARE staff time. Rolling Pet Vet is on the other end of the price scale, they have very reasonable prices, probably less than any other clinic, and they like to work with the non profit groups. If their price is higher than what the OC, then you better head to OC.

Dr Wallace was responsible for the early demise of my dog. The next dog I got Noah's Ark almost killed by ignoring the results of the blood work they ordered. Dr Dalo found my dog's medical problem and successfully treated it. His persistence found exactly what the problem was.

Santa Barbara Pet Hospital is thorough, caring, and will not charge for anything more than what is necessary. We've been taking our pets (dog & cat) there for quite awhile, and have always been very happy with both the service and fees.

Airport Animal Hospital put my cat down when he was in a diabetic emergency because they couldn't be bothered to try a little molasses on his gums before killing him. There was no reason for this callous behavior. When I was totally distraught asking about what happened, the tall older male vet was a jerk to me as he shrugged his shoulders and said, "I didn't know he had diabetes. He looked sick so I euthanized him." No compassion whatsoever.

Stay away from them, far, far away.

C.A.R.E Hospital may extract a tooth that's just hanging loose, quick and easy to do w/o anesthesia.
But I had to argue with them about it.
Their policy is to refer all dental problems back to a vet.
This was my experience a few years ago.
And their prices are extortionate.

We went to the Ark for awhile. Things felt quite a bit more corporate when they became part of VCA and we left our neighborhood vet after a small incident, but one that I didn't care to repeat. A friend told us about Dr Otto in Carpinteria who is amazing and very reasonable! I have a high needs dog and I never feel despairing when we leave...I always have hope. I adore him, but he is semi-retired and I'm not sure if he's taking new patients. My daughter's dog needed care and she wanted a vet that was closer to home, so she took her to Dr Dalo at La Concepcion. Talk about knowledgeable and nice...that's this vet! Turns out my daughter's dog had a mast cell tumor on her knee. This was a tricky surgery because of the location, but the total bill...pre-op, op and post-op was $1400! My dog had mast cell 5 years ago and Ark recommended that I take him to VSMG, which I did. Pre-op, op and post-op for my dog exceeded $6k and his was on the flank which wasn't as tricky as the knee. Anywho...for your dog's tooth I'd see if Dr Otto is taking new patients or schedule with Dr Dalo depending on which is closer to you.

I've been taking my dog to San Roque Pet Hospital and had some masts removed a few years ago. The cost was around $1000. Unfortunately, one mast under his leg didn't get "on the list" to be removed and now it has grown again. I got a quote last September for mast removal for about $900. I decided to wait and then I went to Montecito Pet Hospital for another check-up. The two hospitals are joined together as one hospital with different locations, my understanding. Anyway at Montecito, I asked for another quote for the mast removal and they just quoted me $2500!! How did that go up over 200% in just 8 months?! In fairness, they added a mast on his knee too, which might be more, but really, that much more? I'm just wondering if Montecito overprices, even though they are supposed to be the same price as San Roque. I haven't decided what to do about this, but I feel like they are overpricing this.

What is a "mast"? Seems quite a few dogs here have it? o

A mast is a fatty growth/tumor (not cancerous)/Lipoma.

Mast cell tumors ARE cancerous. They sometimes look like lipomas (fatty tissue bumps which are benign).
