40 Years Marathon Sierra Club Hike Leader Honored!
updated: May 10, 2014, 8:50 PM

By Robert Bernstein

Al Sladek has been leading the Sierra Club Friday evening hikes in Santa Barbara since 1974! Almost every Friday for 40 years non-stop!

The Sierra Club celebrated the occasion at this past Friday's hike with some tokens of appreciation. Al received a plaque of appreciation, a framed group hike photo and a gift certificate for a local sporting goods store. And a home made cake baked by another Sierra Club hike leader Bernard Mines.

Al is almost 72 years old and still looks and acts like a kid. On his 70th birthday he offered these words of wisdom: "Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional."

Here are my photos!

Al's Sierra Club hikes meet in front of the Mission at 6PM every Friday all year round and then carpool to the trail head. After the hikes is a pizza party or a potluck and slide show. Everyone is welcome!

Best wishes,
