Street Blocked Off
updated: May 08, 2014, 8:39 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

What was going on in the block of State Street this morning in front of the Granada? The street was blocked off and it looked like there were dining tables set up.

I dunno, but I saw a sign yesterday at State & Victoria warning that State Street would be closed all day today. Just what we need--another obstacle to bring downtown traffic to a dead stop. I guess the stupid bulbouts aren't enough to promote traffic confusion. Way ta go, City of SB!

Breakfast for the UCSB Economic Conference, great informative stuff. Excellent idea to have the breakfast outside this year, much better than past years inside where it's all crowded and hot.

Folks should eat breakfast at home rather than closing a public street. Feh!

It was a fascinating discussion, really wide ranging, on topics of technology, labor, education, etc.. The title unfortunately doesn't do it justice.

There have been many suggestions about closing State to traffic, maybe this is a trial; start a little at a time.

Agree 472, the panel was very good as was the gentleman from the Atlanta Fed, I had to leave after he spoke though.

Any questions about Thomas Piketty or the recent study that confirms the U.S. is an oligarchy?

And, btw, the were packing everything out from the State Street closure when I arrived at 8:30, so I doubt there was much if any impact on traffic.

513: ANY impact on traffic is too much. Next time have the feed on the Courthouse lawn or someplace, not in the middle of the frickin' main street.

So the ivory tower economists can enjoy breakfast together and hear about how great the economy is, while they obstruct working people trying to get to work.

Close State to Motorized Traffic... all the way up to La Cumbre. We need more of a "walking" downtown!

Having worked right across the street from the Granada for many years, I can tell you first hand that traffic on that block of State from 7:30-8:30am is nil. You people wanking about it probably complain that the sky is the wrong shade of blue also, get over yourselves.

I guess the question is, why would someone want to eat in the street for any reason? If you want to dine al fresco downtown, there are certainly many other more pleasant venues for this--Alameda Park, the Courthouse lawn, De la Guerra Plaza, etc.--which disrupt no traffic at all.

in 1970's they closed down Van Nuys Blvd. due to ugly cruising days. Didn't work for long, but abated the ick. I think it would be nice to make State St. more welcoming. Think Santa Monica Promenade, that's worked since the 1960's or earlier, it's great for businesses and people.
