Eva Menkin Passes Away at 90
updated: May 06, 2014, 12:40 PM

By the Dedicated Staff of edhat.com

Yesterday edhat received an email from subscriber Larry Nimmer about the passing of Eva Menkin. A fascinating woman with a unique historical background, Menkin was a resident of Santa Barbara for 40 years and spoke many times about her childhood in Nazi Germany. Edhat's own Lauren Bray attended a lecture in 2012 hosted by the Santa Barbara Village at the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center when Menkin spoke of her experiences. A short article of the lecture is posted on edhat, Stories from World War II.

Menkin's full obituary can be read at Legacy.com and the original message and video from Larry Nimmer is posted below.

By Larry Nimmer

Longtime Santa Barbara community activist, Eva Menkin, passed away on May 2. She was 90 years old. She was still doing work at the Women's Free Homeless Clinic, the Santa Barbara Opera and other organizations. I had the honor to interview her about her life a couple of weeks ago for Everyone Has a Story. She talks about growing up in Nazi Germany, immigrating to Spain, France and finally the U.S., along with her bohemian mother and friends and finally settling in Santa Barbara. One can watch the interview below:

If anybody is interested in the free service of recording your oral history, you can contact Larry Nimmer at nimmer@EveryoneHasAStory.org .
