I would have my children make paper containers or use strawberry baskets to make May baskets and we would pick flowers from our yard and they would go to our elderly neighbors and hang them on their doorknob and ring their doorbell and hide. The neighbors appreciated it and it helped my kids to feel good.

Putting together May flower baskets as a child, then with my own children. Lovely days. So much fun, laughter and magic. :)

May Day was the time for a dance festival at Roosevelt School - the lower grades performed dances from many countries. The sixth graders danced around the May Pole, weaving colorful streamers into a pattern. Our kind young teacher was Lorenzo Dall Armi, may he rest in peace.

I left mom & dad's house and moved into my very first apartment on a May 1st. That was a celebration.

I used to work at a company whose owner would routinely fire people on May 1, which also happens to be International Workers' Day. No fond memories here.

May 1st was not so much fun for us back in Cuba neither. We were asked to do a several miles walk, under 100F with a sun that break the rocks, shouting communist slogans then forced to listen to a 3 hours speech by the Castro's brothers. Ewww!

Celebrating the pagan ritual of the Maypole in Elementary School. Who knew I was doing an ancient fertility rite done for 100s of years? Sure was a lot of fun, though.

My sister and I liked to put flowers on neighbor's doors. One year we picked a bunch of carnations and put them in all the dishes from the kitchen and left them on the neighbors' doors. Luckily a neighbor saw us and alerted my mom so she could go collect all the dishes we'd taken out of the kitchen. Now I like to make cupcakes with candy flowers on top and give them out to the neighbors.

We would make up a Maybasket- flowers, muffins, treats and take It to someone in our neighborhood. Then we would place the basket on the door mat, ring the bell and run and hide! I grew up in New England and it was very much a tradition there. I loved It!

May 1 is the birthday of Isis, our rescue Husky. Today she turned 3 and got a rawhide bone as a birthday prezzie. Happy Birthday, Isis!

In France we give each other little sprays of Lily of the Valley.
It is a wonderful tradition. I miss it ! Too hot here for that flower.

In the suburbs of Chicago we danced around a May Pole of colorful streamers. All the girls had collected flowers with stems long enough to weave with ribbons into garlands for our hair. We gave the shorter stemmed flowers to our teacher or to some of the boys (who didn't know what to do with them & got all smiley & shy) and we also gave flowers to neighbors :-)

I like the idea about giving cupcakes with flowers on top, thanks.

A granddaughter was born May 1st; her birthday parties always had a May Pole. Such fun. A couple years ago a friend with a farm here in Concha Loma (Carp) had a May Day party with a May Pole, kids and adults participated.

We were at a James Taylor concert at the Bowl, and he started giggling and asked if we could keep a secret. After the cheers stopped, he said he had a poem his father used to say.
Hooray, hooray
The first of May
Outdoor f#*king starts today!
