Helicopter over Red Rock
updated: May 01, 2014, 8:53 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

There is a low flying helicopter in the Paradise/Red Rock area. Anything on the scanner? It has done several fly overs the houses and campgrounds.

There have been 2-3 chinooks circling over the city and mountains for the past 4 days or so. They spent one night at the airport. Not sure why they're hanging out here.

Super low flying white helicopter, N441JL, circled near the Mesa. Internet search said it's from Las Vegas, I wish it would go home.

No Chinooks. Sea Knights. Chinooks are much larger.

Too early for weed. It's planting time, not harvest time

There were 3 Army CH-47 Chinooks that left SBA around 3pm yesterday. Headed in a NW direction over Los Carneros/Hollister area.

Yes indeed. These were CH-47 Chinooks. We usually see the CH-46 Sea Knights coming into SBA.

@737 No, they were not.

following up in response to a few other comments as well... the two helicopters flying around together were indeed NOT Chinooks. They were CH-46s / Seahawks.. You can always tell the difference by the landing gear configuration. Chinooks have four landing wheels, two forward and two aft. Seahawks have tricycle gear, one up front and 2 in the back.

Umm yes these were. I wish i had my camera. They had inflight refueling capability which makes me think they were MH-47s . They had 4 landing wheels and were painted a dark brown almost black in color. CH -46s are typically painted in a low visibilty gray. And they are not called Seahawks they are Sea Knights.

The 3 left SBA on Wednesday at about 1245 heading in a NW direction. Since you mentioned two you probably saw a different pair of helos flying around.

947 It is clear at this point that we are indeed talking about two different sightings of helicopters. Well three if you include the OP initial sighting of a single helicopter. I do not doubt at all the chinooks took off and headed out, but the ones making a few loops coming from downtown SB towards the airport were 100% CH-46s. And I do need to concede they are indeed Sea Knights. No idea what I was thinking at the time.

At least we all now know that that 46s and 47s are on the job and we all can sleep safely tonight.
