Singing/Vocal Lessons
updated: May 01, 2014, 8:06 AM

I am looking for recommendations for singing lessons for my 12 year old daughter. She loves to act, on stage, and we are realizing that she needs to become a better singer so she can get better and bigger parts. I am a single mom and do not have a lot of money to spend but I want to do everything I can to help my amazing daughter pursue her dream of being on Broadway.

Young Singers Club is a good start:

http://youngsingersclub.com/index.html

Lots of performance opportunities, summer camps, mostly popular music and songs from musical theater.

Third vote of confidence in Dauri Kennedy, she really is truly amazing!! In addition to the mentioned SOPA and Marymount classes in comment 475 (group settings) she also offers private voice lessons for children and adults..

My 12 year old daughter's voice lessons are $150 per hour. They are not with anyone named so far. Anyone know the charge for the above mentioned providers? I'd love to switch to someone more reasonable.

@634P, my daughter and I both took lessons with David Potter (who is wonderful, BTW) and he charged less than 1/2 what you're paying. $150 seems a bit much. I have also heard good things about Dauri Kennedy.

Sharlae Jenkins is also very good.

$150 per hour seems VERY steep for lessons for a pre-teen or even a teenager.

Perhaps I'm out of touch now that I'm over 45, but...

Sharlea Jenkins is quite good. I've been taking my grandaughter to kimberly Ford in Goleta for 8-9 months and it works well. She gets the girls to do group and individual numbers in recitals, enourages musical reading and technical skills and arranging, composing, and recording. She's also open to taking a duet or trio instead of just the one student for some lessons and is reasonay priced.

You should also consider "Show Stoppers" who offer excellent summer performing arts programs and operate largely out of the auditorium at La Colina Junior High.

Question...if my daughter has a so-so voice can a voice teacher help her improve her voice? She madly wants to sing but I'm not sure if its a lost cause. Any suggestions? She is 15.

Oh you should definitely talk to Lois Mahalia. She's an amazing professional singer for people like Kenny Loggins, Joe Walsh, etc. and she loves to teach kids! (and she's far less money than what I've seen here).

her website is loismahalia dot com and her email is LoisMahaliaMusic at gmail

I'm sure your daughter would love her!

My daughter improved greatly with singing lessons. Unless you try, you will never know if it is a "lost cause".

Brett with Young Singers offers private lessons for students that age. She's been doing this for 20 years and you can look at her website. Also, summers she usually sends out an email about her choir graduate(s) returning to the area who are looking to teach private lessons - usually around $40 a session. Good luck.
