Earth Day History
updated: Apr 29, 2014, 8:16 AM

By Max Long

Here is a picture of Marc McGinnes on stilts at the Earth Day Festival on Sunday waving one of the original Ecology Flag that were introduced at the first Earth Day observances in 1970. In 1969 Marc helped to plan the first Earth Day, in 1970 served as the founding president of the Community Environmental Council (CEC), in 1971 helped to create the curriculum of the newly-established UCSB Environmental Studies Program, and in 1977 led the founding of the Environmental Defense Center as its Chief Attorney and Executive Director.

The stilts are the ones on which Marc has danced up State Street in the Summer Solstice Parade every year since it became a public event in 1975.
