What's Up With the Construction on Cathedral Oaks?
updated: Apr 26, 2014, 2:35 PM

What's Up?

There is a construction sign on Cathedral Oaks just north of San Marcos Road that states "Road Work From 4-28-14 thru 2-28-16."

Almost 2 years!? Can't find any info about it on Caltrans site. Anyone have a clue? Typo? Hacked?

Bridge replacement? What is wrong with the existing bridge? Age and deterioration? Earthquake retrofit?

IF Caltrans is not doing the work and paying for it who is?

First, I'll assume the poster meant "west" because "north" would be someone's front yard. Second, there's a bridge on Cathedral Oaks Rd?

The 154 overpass is overdue for maintenance. That is probably the project in question.

The bridge is on Cathedral Oaks at Turnpike.

People! It is for your safety! The bridge is old and not to code. Take another route and stop complaining.

Oh, that bridge! Thanks @438!

438, thanks. That makes sense now. Having to drive through that stretch of Cathedral Oaks daily to and from work I've seen that bridge being worked on every once and a while. But to have it worked on for almost 2 years is going to cause major traffic issues. I've seen that area of Cathedral Oaks packed when it becomes the a detour for 101 when accidents happen. I guess I need to find an alternate route, yuck.

The poster said the SIGN, not the bridge....They saw a SIGN

340 & 396P, et al:

East, west, north, south?

When driving, even though the compass tells the true tale, we think of that direction as driving "north," as in Gaviota is "north" of Santa Barbara.

We think of the sun setting in the "west," even though our ocean view faces south.

Yes, the bridge in questions is on Cathedral Oaks just west of Turnpike, crossing over San Antonio Creek. Here:

This is a County of SB project, not Caltrans. (FYI SR 192 starts at 154 where it changes name to Foothill road and heads eastward)

I can't find any project links yet, but the closure info is listed here:

More as I find it....

This Bridge was one of many throughout the south coast constructed of some faulty aggregate materials in the 1950's that all are now failing and reconstructed with Federal Highway funds

OMG we do not drive north to gaviota. If that were the case we'd drive east to go over San Marcos pass. Pbbbbbbbbbt!

The sun sets in the west, towards point Concepcion. Compass, map, GPS, all tell the same story.

580 - Yes, we KNOW Gaviota is actually west of Santa Barbara.

But we THINK of it as being north since we drive to it on northbound 101.

Tourist: "How do I get to Gaviota from here?"

SB Native: "Just head west on the 101. It's about 20 miles up the road."

Tourist: "What!?"

SB Native: "I know the map says 101 north, but some of us Edhatters are sticklers for literal precision and Gaviota is ACTUALLY west. Why the mapmakers don't acknowledge this we don't know."

Tourist: "Thanks, I think. Oh, and how do I get to the Arroyo Burro beach?"

SB Native: "There's no such beach here, but I can direct you to Hendry's Beach if you like."

Tourist: "No thanks - I was told that Arroyo Burro beach was really nice and to accept no substitutes."

SB Native: "Suit yourself."
