So I found this bug on the paper tree in my parking lot im not sure if something hatched out of it like a scene from alien, or if it shed its skin. But the main question is, what is it?

What size?

Looks like could either be a Honey Bee or a Potato Bug.

Can't tell without knowing size. Maybe take another photo with a ruler or quarter in the picture.

It's the molted exoskeleton on a cicada. We have 65 species of cicada in California, some molt multiple times each year.

It's a totally harmless Cicada. They are pretty after they molt and show their wings. They don't bite or sting or harm humans in any way. Leave him be.

A honey bee, but if it's larger than that I say potato bug or cicada, leave nature to do it's own thing.

Cicada exoskeleton. Are there shrill buzzing sounds coming from your pepper tree at the hottest part of the day?

At what stage of growth would that look like a bee?
