Problems Finding Doctors
updated: Apr 21, 2014, 8:50 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

Has anyone else had problems finding doctors to accept Covered California Blue Shield? We were just switched from Blue Cross to Covered California Blue Shield and we're finding it hard to locate doctors who'll accept the plan. Anyone else going through this?

Sansum accepts it and so does Jackson Medical Group

Watch out for Jackson Medical - you will be seen for five minutes, and most likely by a PA. If you need help after hours, chances are they will have a PA on call. They have a turnover problem with docs, and you can wait weeks to see one of the few docs they hold on to. Turnover is a problem at all staff levels, and they have made more mistakes (tests ordered for wrong limb, etc.) in the last year than ever before. The owners have become absentee (Dr. Jackson was awesome, but has retired), so maybe they are unaware of drop in quality.

Sansum does not accept Covered California Blue Shield. They do accept Covered California Blue Cross.

Sansum does not accept Blue Shield. They accept Blue Cross, not Blue Shield.

There is some false info going on here. I have Blue Shield of California and Sansum does indeed accept it!

Hi folks. Note that the OP is asking about Covered California. Those of you who say Sansum does accept Blue Shield -- are these Covered California plans?

I had some trouble. I have started with Jackson Medical and so far have been happy. However they said there is almost no specialists or facilities that accept the plan and will be a problem. We were able to go with the 90 percent coverage with Blue Shield but have been told it's better to take less coverage with Blue Cross in the long run. Something I have to look into.

Covered California has a different plan than the commercially available Blue Cross. The Covered California plan Blue Cross is not accepted by Samsum. Covered California, for those that don't know, is Obamacare. Is anyone surprised that you can't keep your doctor as was promised?

We had blue shield and once it switched to a blue shield covered California (in January) literally no one would take us. It was really horrible, I had no idea that it would be different because we had always had blue shield, and I had to pay full price for some doctor visits. Anyways I switched to blue cross through covered cal, and it's a little better. Good luck!

What got me was that, regardless of income, kids are being put on medi-cal. We got covered CA for our family of 4, I make just north of 6 figures and they put both our kids on medical. I guess it's because it's cheaper for the state to have medi-cal for the kids? Wife and I got BlueCross Silver plans. I suppose the + side is that we have absolutely 0 out of pocket costs for the kids now, but now we are forced to find a medi-cal doctor for them. Weird...

If you go to the website for blueshieldca . com - you can search for doctors who are accepting new patients. There are lots of them.

My understanding of Sansum is that they accept Blue Shield individual or group plans but not Blue Shield covered California plans based on extensive phone calls a month ago.

@ JBYRD (or anybody who might know)
I have three college aged kids and when I filled out the info for Covered Cal it offered my older (19 yr old) son and I the typical Blue Shield, Blue Cross offerings, but directed my two 18 year olds to Medi Cal! Any idea why? I am afraid to put them on Medi-Cal! If I wait 'til they're 19 will they offer the regular plans to them?

0 out of pocket costs? Not really, you're paying for that with taxes. And a lot of other people are forced to pay for it as well. 'It' is an insurance policy, a piece of paper. Pieces of paper don't treat or cure anything.

Insurance companies and the government are scamming all of you blind. They have no intention of helping you. Doctors are figuring this out & retiring.

The problem with the Blue Shield Covered California website is that a number of the doctors listed there don't actually take the insurance! If you call them up and ask them if they take it, they don't. I showed up for a doctor appt and they were supposed to accept Blue Shield Covered California. They even told me on the phone, yes, we accept it. When I got there, they said sorry, we don't. Hope this wasn't inconvenient! :-(

I am newly insured and chose a blue shield PPO through Covered CA. It was a bit of work finding a primary care doctor who is actually accepting new patients (lots are listed on the blue shield website but few are actually accepting new patients) I did finally find one and met with him yesterday.

Specialists, on the other hand, seem to be very easy to get appointments with and under my plan (silver enhanced) I am able to go directly to a specialist without a referral.

My fees have been very reasonable so far. $15 copay for office visits and $20 copay for specialist visits.

Sansum does NOT accept blue shield Covered CA plans. They accept Blue Cross.

I hope most people take the time to understand how the ACA is working instead of making rash, inaccurate statements such as FREEMAN does.

@freeman...fully understand that, get your point and all. I suppose you could just say that my taxes are paying for my kids health insurance now instead of it coming out of my pocket. At least my share of that portion of taxes is going to my family now instead of someone else's. I would have much rather placed my kids on the blue cross plan but didn't have a choice.

My Covered California coverage began on April 1st. Before coverage began, I called my doctors' offices and asked if they will be participants in Covered California. The answers were no.
My medical conditions are many and complicated and I experience a great deal of daily chronic pain. I can't just up and change to different doctors: my doctors know my long medical history, my experiences on certain medications, my progress and lack of progress on the approaches they have taken to managing my health issues, etc.
I have an internist, a neurologist, an allergist/immunologist, and an endocrinologist. At times I need to see a gastroenterologist and dermatologist. Lack of participation in Covered California most definitely effects my bottom line. On another related subject, my health insurance company has denied me coverage for medications I've been taking for pain reduction. Some of these medications perform well for me, and I have a long track record with. One single medication I take for pain reduction costs $2,000 for a one month prescription. I stop taking that medication, and within a day I am again living every moment of my life in very severe pain, unable to function.
