Scanner Reports 4-21-14
updated: Apr 21, 2014, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Monday. I hope the Easter Bunny was good to all of you, not just part. Seems like every time I try and plan something for a holiday it don't work out. Maybe I'm just too old. I was thinking about all the good people I have ran into in my life over the Weekend and some of the experiences I have had it really is a miracle I still exist. It's good to be able to still remember good things .I used to run away a lot when I was a kid I felt like there was no other way in my life. After a few other places I was sent to a boys' home in Fort Wayne we were not locked up so it was easy to leave. Most of us boys there were Ward of the Court troubled kids in one way or another, violent but someone had Hope they could help us turn our lives around. In Fort Wayne there was this one woman whose Son was in the Boys Home with me. Every day she would go up to the grocery store and search the dumpster for dated food they would throw away, mostly potatoes. She'd cut off the good parts and make a huge vat of soup and feed all the hungry people in the neighborhood no matter who they were. Mostly the hungry people were runaway kids. Without fail everyday there was this huge pot of steamy potato soup, bread, butter, and powdered milk. Us kids never went hungry because of this woman she had a beautiful soul. I remember she had horrible pain and couldn't move too well but everyday no matter what she got up to the store and got those potatoes to feed us hungry kids.

One time I was hitching thru Gary, Indiana trying to get to Chicago there was a car load of Revolutionary types pulled over and I was running for their car a big brown Lincoln when I heard a horn blowing behind me. I turned around and there was this guy wearing a suit sitting in a plain black Ford. He was signaling for me to go to his car. I did, he showed me some ID and told me to get in. He was an FBI Agent that broke his cover following the people in the Lincoln to save me from getting into their car. He took me to a Howard Johnsons got me a room a meal gave me a few bucks and took off. Before he left me there he told me to go home but it was up to me to do what I thought was right if I had a real home to go home to at the time I would have.

Niagara Falls N.Y. 1977 was a cold, cold winter. Me and Sheree my girlfriend hitched from Fort Wayne to there in several days. It was very cold the Evening we got there. She had friends that would take us in but we still had a few miles to go. We stood at the side of a road blowing into our hands a station wagon pulled over I opened the door Sheree got in the front I got in the back. The driver was an Angel carrying a child. She took us to a restaurant and bought us a meal gave us money and smokes and took us to where we was going. We asked for her address to pay her back but she refused and told us to "Pass it on." Me and the Gal did not stay together. I found myself hitching back alone on the way back a night desk clerk let me sleep in the front area of a Holiday Inn overnight in Buffalo. I got a lot of rides back, remember this one fella had an old Ford Falcon with holes in the floorboard and no heat gave me a pair of gloves to wear while in his car, a cigar, he pulled over got us both a cup of hot chocolate, steaming hot chocolate. After he dropped me off in Ohio I couldn't get a ride for nothing. Someone worried about my welfare called the cops on me I went to the Akron County Detention Home. I had frost bite on my leg and their sawbones wanted to saw off my leg but we saved it. I am kinda crippled but I got my leg.

South Bend Indiana 1974, it had started to rain on Route 30 a box truck pulled over I ran up and got in... This guy was a preacher in Warsaw Indiana took me home let me clean up and his family fed me. They wanted to adopt me but my Mom said no. It's too bad I'd probably be a preacher today. Maybe one of those TV Guys with high hair and lots of pretty Angel women singing around me as I booze it up behind the curtains.

I'm not much for going to Church. I like to remember the good times, and good people in my life, living in the past lol. It's not hurting nobody and it makes me feel good.

My mother had a close call the other day she was taking her groceries out of her car and into the house when some big ugly guy grabbed a couple bags and followed her into her home. He was dirty head to toe she told me, and big. He started talking to her telling her he couldn't work no more because he got hurt on the job etc. He said he lived a couple streets away and did odd jobs. He followed her into the house. Well nothing happened but he did succeed in getting in her house so he might come back again. She had a loose lock on her door and got it fixed and the police showed up. Hopefully he won't come back. She's got some good neighbors over there that watch out for her. It's always good to be aware of your surroundings she lives in the better part of town but things happen everywhere. Hopefully this guy was just looking for work,we will see.

Thru the years I have tried to find old friends dig up my past a bit someone to call once in a while say Hello or send them a card. I haven't found many of the guys that were in the boys' home with me. Of those I have, several are dead, a couple are in prison. I found a couple who never answered when I wrote to them and I found one on Facebook last week. I haven't contacted him yet, and not a hundred percent sure I will. Sometimes I think it's good to leave Well Enough Alone and be Happy with the memories. Anyway Have a Great Monday and Dog willing we will see you on Wednesday, Hump Day! Later, Roger
