Couch Disposal
updated: Apr 19, 2014, 7:15 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

While I was out today, someone kindly deposited an unwanted couch on the sidewalk. How do I dispose of this? Will Marborg make a pick up?

Some local renter will probably grab it. If not, the trash men will.

That's pretty bad.

I wouldn't sit on it!

Marborg won't pick it up. If they did, then people would just leave whatever furniture & junk that they didn't want out on some random sidewalk.

NB, actually Marborg will pick it up, I believe it is part of their contract with the city. Otherwise large trash items would stay on our streets forever.

Marborg (or someone) definitely picks them up, considering how often they were dumped and removed along San Pascual on the westside when I lived there...

Are you in the city of SB? If so you can call the customer service number on your refuse bill and they will give you the number of some city agency (I can't remember which one) that will pick up abandoned furniture.

It really saddens me that people can't take responsibility for their garbage. I see this all over town... most recently everything from couches and worn mattresses to toilet bowls. These people are about as trashy as the trash they leave behind.

Marborg does two free large trash pickups per year for each customer. Just call them and schedule a pickup. Good time to clean out any other unwanted large items you might have. We do it at least once a year to clean out the garage of junk.

Marborg does two free large trash pickups per year for each RESIDENTIAL customer. This doesn't apply to apartments or commercial accounts.

Put it in craigslist for free. Someone, or possibly the gleaners, will use or resell it, unless it is just trash. Perhaps those who abandoned it hope that someone can use it.

Do not look at the couch as something that needs to be discarded. Simply cover or wrap it in colorful yarn and call it art. It will be bright and beautiful, plus amaze everyone. Consider transporting the "couchbomb" up in to the hills and leave it along a hiking trail where nature lovers could enjoy your creation. Be sure to retrieve your art after 16 days or so as to not become an eyesore.

...and now, Sunday morning, some thoughtful pedestrian turned it over into the street.

Homeless people sleep on those dumped couches..

If that's the case, Roger, then let's transport all the couches & unwanted Lazy Boys to the greater LA area. It'll be like a "magnet" school of sorts.

If you are in the city limits, call the streets dept. under public works, and tell them (or leave a message) that there has been illegal dumping. They will pick it up.

I expected somebody would have posted the phone# to report abandoned trash. Then, it get's picked up for free. Lot's of phone #'s in the front of the phone book. Not sure where the OP lives, but here is the # for the City:::::

So why would anyone utilize the allotted twice-yearly Marborg pickup if Marborg will pick up anything at any time on any sidewalk??

COMMENT 512654 agree helpful negative off topic

Dumping on the sidewalk is illegal just as any form of littering is. However Marborg has it in their contract with the city that if there are items dumped on use road or sidewalk like mattresses and furniture that they have to pick it up and dispose of it. It's part of their agreement to get a monopoly on trash service with the city. It still doesn't make it right for someone to do so just because a company is contracted to pick it up at no charge (technically) to the person that did the dumping. The illegal dumper can be cited if they are caught...
